Record Voice Memos on your iPhone and iPod touch

Create voice memos with your device's built-in microphone, a wired or Bluetooth headset, or a compatible microphone. Then you can share and edit your work.

Voice Memos uses your device's built-in microphone when you record. For a higher-quality stereo recording, use an external stereo microphone that works with your iPhone.

How to record a voice memo

  1. Find and open Voice Memos or ask Siri to open it.* 
  2. To record, tap Red circle icon. To pause, tap Red square in black circle icon. Learn how to edit.
  3. When you finish, tap Done. 
  4. Name your voice memo, then tap Save. 

Want to share your voice memo with a friend or save it to a second location? Tap the memo, then tap . To send to a friend, choose a way to share, like through Messages or a social-media app. To save your memo to another location, choose an option like iCloud Drive or Mail.

* Can't find the Voice Memos app? From your Home screen, swipe right until a screen appears with a Search bar at the top, then enter Voice Memos in the Search bar. Still don't see the app? You might have removed it. Learn how to restore an app that you removed.

Listen while you edit

  1. To pause you recording, tap .
  2. Swipe left or right over the blue line until it marks the point that you want to listen from.
  3. Then tap  and you can listen from that point.

 

 

Record

Rerecord part of a voice memo

  1. If you're recording, tap Red square in black circle icon, which pauses your work. If you want to edit a saved memo, open Voice Memos, tap the memo, then tap Edit.
  2. Swipe left or right over the blue line until it reaches the beginning of the part that you want to record over.
  3. Tap  when you're ready to rerecord.
  4. Tap Red square in black circle icon when you finish.

Edit

Trim from the beginning or end of a memo

  1. To edit as you record, tap , which pauses your work. To edit a saved memo, open Voice Memos, tap the memo, then tap Edit.
  2. Swipe left or right over the blue line until it marks where you want your memo to start or end.
  3. Tap . Two red lines appear. Your blue line doesn't move. 
  4. To trim from the beginning, drag the leftmost red line and drop it on the blue line. To trim from the end, drag the rightmost red line and drop it on the blue line.
  5. Tap Trim. To confirm, tap Trim again.
  6. Tap Done, enter a title, and tap Save.

 

Delete part of a memo

  1. To edit as you record, tap , which pauses your work. To edit a saved memo, open Voice Memos, tap the memo, then tap Edit.
  2. Swipe left or right over the blue line until it marks the beginning of the part that you want to delete. 
  3. Tap Blue square-like icon. Two red lines appear. Your blue line doesn't move.
  4. Drag the leftmost red line and drop it on top of the blue one. 
  5. Drag the rightmost red line and drop it at the end of the part that you want to delete.
  6. To delete the part between the red lines, tap Delete, then tap Delete From Original.

Delete a voice memo

  1. Open Voice Memos.
  2. Tap the memo that you want to delete.
  3. Tap Trashcan icon, then tap Delete ["title"].
