Measure your walking steadiness with your iPhone

On an iPhone 8 or later with iOS 15, you can view your walking steadiness and classification to gain insight into your risk of falling.

About Walking Steadiness

Walking Steadiness uses custom algorithms to assess your balance, stability, and coordination through the built-in motion sensors on your iPhone. As you walk with your iPhone, it tracks important mobility metrics, such as walking speed, step length, double support time, and walking asymmetry. These are used to determine your walking steadiness and classification.

Your walking steadiness is classified as OK, Low, or Very Low. You can also choose to receive a notification if your steadiness is Low or Very Low.

If you have health sharing enabled, you can choose to automatically share your walking steadiness data and notifications with friends or family.

Set up Walking Steadiness

  1. On your iPhone, open the Health app, then tap Summary.
  2. Scroll to Walking Steadiness Notifications, then tap Set Up.
  3. Follow the onscreen prompts to confirm your Health Details, learn about Walking Steadiness Levels, and turn on notifications.
  4. Tap Done.

Put your iPhone in your front pocket or in a pocket near your waist while walking. You'll receive a notification if your steadiness level is low enough to put you at risk for a fall within the next year.

View your Walking Steadiness history

  1. From the Health app, tap Browse.
  2. Tap Mobility, then tap Walking Steadiness.

If you have Walking Steadiness added to the Favorites section, you can access it from the Summary tab in the Health app.
