iPhone OS: Troubleshooting international keyboards
Symptoms
This article explains some common issues and troubleshooting when using international keyboards for non-Roman alphabets such as Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Russian, or Ukrainian.
When using one of the international keyboards, a QWERTY keyboard may temporarily appear (the title "QWERTY" appears on the Space key):
- When using the QWERTY keyboard, it may unexpectedly change to the other international keyboard.
Products Affected
iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch (2nd generation)
Resolution
When using one of the international keyboards for non-Roman alphabets, such as Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Russian, or Ukrainian, a QWERTY keyboard will temporarily appear so you can easily enter a password, email, or web address. This is expected behavior. To understand the differences between common keyboards that have a QWERTY-style layout, see below.
When using the Kana keyboard with the Emoji keyboard, the QWERTY keyboard should go away automatically when not needed, but in some cases it may not always do so. Tap the Globe icon to switch keyboards if this occurs.
If tapping the Globe icon to switch keyboards does not work, there is a workaround that will avoid the issue:
- Tap outside of the editing field to dismiss the keyboard.
- Tap the field again to enter text, and the Globe icon should work as expected.
If the issues occur frequently, there is a workaround to suppress them:
Enable the English QWERTY keyboard in Settings > General > International Keyboards in addition to the other keyboards selected.
Additional Information
When you switch keyboards, the title of the keyboard appears briefly on the Space key. For example:
