iPhone: Troubleshooting voicemail issues

Summary

If you are unable to access or set up voicemail for the first time, or after updating to iPhone 2.0 software or later, and encounter one of the following symptoms:

- Tapping Phone > Voicemail displays the following screen:

Follow these steps to troubleshoot issues with accessing voicemail on your iPhone:

  1. Use iTunes to update your iPhone to the latest software.
  2. Make sure you have good cellular network connection. You can verify whether you can make and receive calls.
  3. Try dialing your phone number from your iPhone to make sure your voice mailbox is set up properly.
  4. If that doesn't help, try removing the SIM card, and then re-inserting the SIM card. This article provides you with a step-by-step description.
  5. If that doesn't help, contact your carrier.

Contact you carrier if you are experiencing the following difficulties while traveling abroad:

  • Unable to receive and listen to voicemail messages
  • Callers do not hear your recorded voicemail greeting
