Set up binaural render modes in Logic Pro for Mac
With a Dolby Atmos mix, each channel of the surround bed and each object can be set to one of four render modes. This setting is only used by the binaural Dolby Renderer and therefore is only active in the Dolby Atmos plug-in when Dolby Renderer is selected in the Monitoring Format pop-up menu.

Binaural audio
A binaural renderer is an algorithm also referred to as the head-related transfer function (HRTF). When a conventional two-channel stereo signal is listened to over headphones, it appears to be “inside” the head, or at the left and right ears. When an audio signal is processed with a binaural renderer, on the other hand, it creates a special two-channel signal that, when listened to over headphones, makes the signal sound like it’s coming from “outside” the head. The listener experiences a spatialized, or externalized, sound, resulting in a three-dimensional immersive sound experience.
Binaural render modes
The Dolby Renderer option, when selected in the Monitoring Format pop-up menu, lets you assign a distance value (known as a binaural render mode) to each surround bed channel and 3D object. This gives you more control over the perceived position of each channel in the resulting binaural mix. The default binaural render mode for each channel is Mid. The LFE channel is set to Off and can’t be changed. Channels set to Off are still included in the binaural render without distance modeling applied.
Set the binaural render modes
In the Dolby Atmos plug-in, choose Dolby Renderer from the Monitoring Format pop-up menu.
Click the List button
in the upper-right corner of the plug-in window, then click the Binaural Renderer button.
In the Binaural Render column, click the Binaural Render mode pop-up menu for any of the surround bed channels or any of the 3D objects tracks you want to change.
The menus are inactive when any monitoring format other than the Dolby Renderer is selected.
Choose a setting (Off, Near, Mid, or Far) from the pop-up menu.
The default binaural render mode for each channel is Mid. The LFE channel is set to Off and can’t be changed.
Note: The binaural render modes have no effect when you choose one of the four Apple Renderer options as monitoring format.
