About Setup Assistant
Setup Assistant is a step-by-step process that runs automatically when a new or recently erased device is turned on. It helps users configure essential settings such as language, Wi-Fi, Apple Account, Face ID or Touch ID, and other options. On iPhone or iPad, users can set up the device as new, restore from an iCloud or computer backup, or transfer data from another Apple device. On Mac, users can set up the device as new, restore from a Time Machine or other backup solution, or use Migration Assistant to transfer from another Mac.
If an organization uses a device management service, some Setup Assistant screens might be bypassed. You should direct users to contact the device management administrator for setup instructions.
On the Mac, Setup Assistant can be skipped entirely, and the Mac can be set up without user interaction using Auto Advance.
For more information, see iPhone and iPad setup.
Note: To expedite redeployment of devices, the device management administrator can configure Return to Service in the device management service. When the erase command is sent to a supervised and managed iPhone or iPad, the device automatically proceeds to the Home Screen, ready for use. For more information, see Return to Service for iPhone and iPad in Apple Platform Deployment.
Unexpected Setup Assistant behavior and solutions
Setup Assistant walks users through each step, from activation to configuration and signing in to an Apple Account. The device service administrator might streamline the setup process by skipping certain Setup Assistant screens. If something interrupts Setup Assistant during a transfer, you will need to erase the new device and start again.
For more information to help identify and resolve common issues, see iPhone and iPad setup and Use Setup Assistant on Mac.
Note: A device management administrator can configure these settings. For more information about your organization’s requirements and device policies, check with your device management team.
