Why aren't songs with the same album art grouped together?

Songs from the same album might not be grouped together as you expect when you view them in the Albums view in iTunes.

Music you have in your iTunes Library can be organized by Albums, but songs you might expect to show up in the same album might sometimes appear to be from different albums.

There are three reasons why songs from the same album might not be grouped together:

  1. The album names might differ slightly.
  2. The album might be a compilation, meaning that songs from the album might have different artists.
  3. Some songs on the album might have different album artists.

If the album names differ slightly

Slight variations in the spacing, spelling, or punctuation of an album name can cause iTunes to think the two songs are from separate albums. For example, one album name might have an extra space in it that the actual album name doesn't.

To make sure that all of the songs that are from the same album have the exact same album name, follow the steps below:

  1. Select all of the songs that should be on the same album.
  2. Mac: From the menu bar at the top of your computer screen, choose File > Get Info.
Windows: Press the Control and B keys on your keyboard to turn on the iTunes menu bar. Choose File > Get Info. Learn more about menus in iTunes for Windows.
  3. In the "Are you sure you want to edit information for multiple items? " message that appears, click Edit Items.
  4. In the box next to "album," type the correct album name.
  5. Click OK.

If the album is a compilation

If an album is a compilation, and includes songs from multiple artists, iTunes might display the songs as being from separate albums.

To mark these songs as part of a compilation, follow the steps below:

  1. Select all of the songs that belong in the compilation.
  4. Click the box next to "Album is a compilation of songs by various artists." A check mark appears.
  5. Click OK.

If songs have different album artists

If albums include songs by multiple album artists, iTunes might display the songs as being from separate albums. To assign a primary artist name for an album that includes songs by several artists, follow the steps below:

  1. Select all of the songs that should have the same album artist.
  4. In the box next to "album artist," type the album artist that you want all of the songs to have (for example, James Newton Howard).
  5. Click OK.
