WWDC26 Education-specific updates
Note: The features discussed on this page are pre-release versions and may be incomplete, changed, or removed before final release.
Guided browsing and lock to URL
A majority of education technology tools are accessed using websites. Keeping students on a specific website and preventing them from navigating away can be a challenge for instructors.
In a new version of the Classroom app on devices with iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, instructors can lock student devices to one or more specific websites, which creates a focused, controlled browsing session—no IT configuration is required. Instructors initiate a guided browsing session from Classroom, then student iPad and Mac devices lock to the instructor-specified URLs in a full window in the Guided Browser app. All of the following remain active:
Shared cookie store
Safari extensions
Content filtering
AutoFill
Accessibility settings
Instructors can access saved bookmarks and favorites directly from Classroom for common lesson destinations and if necessary, they can navigate all enrolled student devices to a new URL without ending the session.
For more information, see the WWDC26 session What’s New in Assessment on macOS.
Multi-app mode
Instructors and students use an average of 40+ education technology tools (Source: Instructure: K-12 EdTech Engagement) throughout the school year, and a single lesson may require accessing assignments in a learning management system, watching an instructional video, taking notes, and using a calculator.
Later this year, a new version of the Classroom app will allow instructors to lock student iPad and Mac devices to one or more apps to allow multi-app learning sessions without giving students unrestricted device access.
Students can move seamlessly between approved apps with full functionality and instructors can modify the app list in Classroom during an active session without ending the locked session.
Assessment mode
New assessment mode features on macOS for education assessment will help app vendors manage standardized testing using a Mac. On a Mac with macOS 27, developers can now adopt a flexible, granular version of Automatic Assessment Configuration on Mac to create a secure, configurable testing environment that incorporates more system-level features on the Mac, including the Dock and Menu Bar. In addition, built-in system pre-checks and accessibility controls deliver a reliable exam experience.
