Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

Important

Complete back glass removal steps 1 through 4. Then continue to step 1.

  1. Use a torque driver and trilobe bit to remove seven trilobe screws from the upper connector cowling, middle connector cowling, lower connector cowling, the bottom speaker, and the main microphone. Remove the cowlings and save them for reassembly.

    • Lift the ends of the battery flex cable (1), the back glass flex cable (2), and two TrueDepth camera flex cables (3) off the connectors.

    • Caution

      • You must disconnect the battery flex cable first to ensure that the iPhone remains turned off.

      • The battery flex cable has strong adhesive under it. Don’t tear the flex cable while removing it.

      • Hold the back glass by the edges. Pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them from the back glass. Then set the back glass facedown on a clean, flat surface.

      • Remove the TrueDepth camera.

  2. Remove the battery.

  3. Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove 13 crosshead screws from the top speaker, camera, Taptic Engine, and bottom speaker.

    • Remove the bottom speaker.

    • Remove the Taptic Engine cowling and save it for reassembly.

  4. Lift the ends of seven flex cables off the connectors on the logic board and lift the end of the Taptic Engine flex cable off the connector.

  5. Use a torque driver and super screw bit to remove eight super screws.

    • Remove the top speaker.

    • Remove the Taptic Engine.

    • Lift the end of the main microphone flex cable off the connector and remove the main microphone.

  6. Use a torque driver and super screw bit to remove one super screw.

    • Remove the SIM tray if applicable and save it for reassembly. Verify that the SIM tray ejector is pushed in.

    • Slightly lift the logic board and gently separate the SIM assembly from the enclosure along with the attached SIM assembly standin. Remove the SIM assembly from the enclosure.

      • Caution: The SIM assembly standin must stay attached to the SIM assembly.

  7. Use a torque driver and trilobe bit to remove five trilobe screws from the USB-C connector.

  8. Use a torque driver and long crosshead bit to remove two crosshead screws from the USB-C connector.

    • Caution: Keep the torque driver at a low angle to avoid stripping the screws.

  9. Lift the end of the USB-C connector flex cable as shown and peel the flex cable from the enclosure. Then remove the USB-C connector from the enclosure.

Reassembly

  1. Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove all residual adhesive from the enclosure. Use an ethanol wipe or IPA wipe to clean the enclosure.

  2. Ensure that the two grounding clips are still intact. If they have fallen off or shifted, use ESD-safe tweezers to reposition them.

  3. Peel all the adhesive liners off the replacement USB-C connector, making note of the areas where adhesive is present.

  4. Insert a USB-C charge cable into the port on the iPhone. Position the USB-C connector in the enclosure. Then press the USB-connector into the USB-C charge cable for proper alignment.

    • Warning: Ensure that the USB-C charge cable isn't plugged into an outlet.

  5. Press the USB-C flex cable to the enclosure, paying close attention to the areas where adhesive is present.

    • Note: To avoid damaging surrounding parts, wearing gloves is recommended.

  6. Use the blue torque driver and long crosshead bit to install two new crosshead screws (923-12373) into the USB-C connector.

    • Caution: Keep the torque driver at a low angle to avoid stripping the screws.

  7. Use the green torque driver and trilobe bit to install five new trilobe screws into the USB-C connector.

    • Three screws (923-08382) (1)

    • One screw (923-12616) (2)

    • One screw (923-02584) (3)

  8. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 10 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and super screw bit to install one new super screw (923-12372) into the USB-C connector.

  9. Gently lift the logic board and reinstall the SIM assembly.

  10. Reinstall the SIM tray for alignment (if available).

  11. Set the torque value on the adjustable torque driver to 10 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and super screw bit to install three new super screws into the logic board and SIM assembly:

    • One screw (923-12615) (2)

    • Two screws (923-12613) (4)

  12. Set the torque value on the adjustable torque driver to 14.5 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and super screw bit to install three new super screws into the logic board:

    • One screw (923-14516) (1)

    • Two screws (923-12371) (3)

  13. Press the ends of the five flex cables to the connectors on the logic board.

Reinstall the following parts to complete reassembly:

Warning

It is recommended to only install new batteries. Used battery cells can become damaged during the removal process. Read Battery Safety to learn more.
