iPhone 17e Taptic Engine

Before You Begin

 Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Tools

  • Crosshead 44 mm half-moon bit

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torque driver (orange, 0.85 kgf cm)

  • Trilobe 44 mm half-moon bit

Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

Important

Complete back glass removal steps 1 through 4. Then continue to step 1.

  1. Use a torque driver and trilobe bit to remove the three trilobe screws from the middle and lower connector cowlings.

    • Remove the lower connector cowling and save it for reassembly.

    • Remove the middle connector cowling and save it for reassembly.

  2. Lift the end of the battery flex cable off the connector (1). Then lift the end of the back glass flex cable off the connector (2).

    • Caution

      • You must disconnect the battery flex cable first to ensure that the iPhone remains turned off.

      • The battery flex cable has strong adhesive under it. Don’t tear the flex cable while removing it.

    • Hold the back glass by the edges. Pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them from the back glass. Then set the back glass facedown on a clean, flat surface.

  3. Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove three crosshead screws from the Taptic Engine. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Remove the Taptic Engine connector cowling and save it for reassembly.

      •  Caution: Don’t damage the grounding spring on the cowling.

    • Lift the end of the Taptic Engine flex cable off the connector.

    • Remove the Taptic Engine from the enclosure.

Reassembly

  1. Position the Taptic Engine in the enclosure.

  2. Press the end of the Taptic Engine flex cable to the connector.

  3. Position the Taptic Engine connector cowling over the end of the Taptic Engine flex cable.

  4. Use the orange torque driver and crosshead bit to install two new crosshead screws (923-08378) into the Taptic Engine connector cowling.

  5. Use the orange torque driver and crosshead bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-12367) into the Taptic Engine.
