Removal

Important

Complete back glass removal steps 1 through 4. Then continue to step 1.

  1. Use a torque driver and the trilobe bit to remove five trilobe screws from the middle and upper cowlings, the bottom speaker, and the main microphone.

    • Remove the lower connector cowling and save for reassembly.

    • Remove the middle connector cowling and save for reassembly.

  2. Lift the end of the battery flex cable off the connector (1). Then lift the end of the back glass flex cable off the connector (2).

    • Caution

      • You must disconnect the battery flex cable first to ensure that the iPhone remains turned off.

      • The battery flex cable has strong adhesive under it. Don’t tear the flex cable while removing it.

    • Hold the back glass by the edges. Pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them from the back glass. Then put the back glass into an ESD-safe bag.

  3. Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove seven crosshead screws from the Taptic Engine and bottom speaker. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Remove the bottom speaker.

    • Remove the Taptic Engine cowling and save for reassembly.

    • Lift the end of the Taptic Engine flex cable off the connector. Remove the Taptic Engine.

  4. Lift the tab to reveal one of the super screws. Then use a torque driver and super screw bit to remove two super screws from the main microphone. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Lift the end of the main microphone flex cable off the connector. Remove the main microphone.

      • Important: The main microphone is held in place by strong adhesive. Pull the main microphone toward the top of the enclosure until the microphone separates from the adhesive.

Reassembly

  1. Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove all adhesive from the enclosure. Use an ethanol wipe or IPA wipe to clean the enclosure.

  2. Use ESD-safe tweezers to peel the protective liner from the adhesive on the main microphone. Then position the main microphone in the enclosure by aligning the screw holes. Press and hold the top of the main microphone for 15 seconds to adhere it to the enclosure.

  3. Press the end of the main microphone flex cable to the connector.

  4. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 10 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and adjustable torque driver super screw bit to install two new super screws into the main microphone:

    • One super screw (923-12369) (1)

    • One super screw (923-12370) (2)

  5. Use the green torque driver and trilobe bit to install one new trilobe screw (923-08382).
