Track automation vs. region automation in Logic Pro for Mac
Logic Pro for Mac offers two types of automation: track automation and region automation. Track automation can be applied to the entire track, from the beginning to the end of your project. Region automation applies only to the specific region the automation parameters are connected to. With track automation, if you re-record, move, or copy regions (either to another point on the same track or to another track entirely) the automation data remains tied to the initial point on the track in which it was created. However, with region automation, if you re-record the region, the automation is lost; if you move or copy the region (either to another point on the same track, or to another track) the automation remains with the region. Region automation is particularly useful when you are automating instrument parameters.
When using region automation with instrument tracks, you can also automate MIDI data for individual notes. In addition, you can also convert track automation to region automation and vice versa.
A single track can have track automation on the track, and regions on that track with region automation. To switch between which type of automation to view, see Switch between track automation and region automation.
Note: In previous versions of Logic Pro for Mac, MIDI Draw was used to automate MIDI data for individual notes. Region automation includes all the functionality of MIDI Draw.
