iCloud: Delete a note

Delete a note

You can delete any of your iCloud notes using Notes on iCloud.com. Deleting notes you don’t need is a good way to keep your notes list uncluttered.

Delete a note

  1. Select the note you want to delete.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • If you’re using upgraded notes, click the Trash button in the toolbar.

When you delete an upgraded note, it’s moved to the Recently Deleted folder on iCloud.com and your devices that use upgraded notes that use the same iCloud account. You can view and recover notes in the Recently Deleted folder for up to 30 days before they’re permanently deleted. If you want to edit notes in the Recently Deleted folder, you must first recover them.

    • If you’re not using upgraded notes, click Delete in the toolbar.

Important: If you’re not using upgraded notes, you can’t recover notes you delete.

Recover recently deleted notes

If you’re using upgraded notes, you can recover and edit iCloud notes you deleted in the last 30 days on iCloud.com or your devices that use upgraded notes and the same iCloud account. However, you can’t recover notes you permanently removed (as described in Permanently remove recently deleted notes).

  1. Select Recently Deleted on the left.

If you don’t see Recently Deleted in the folder list on the left, you don’t have any recoverable notes.

If you don’t see a folder list to the left of the notes list, you’re not using upgraded notes and can’t recover deleted notes.

  2. Select a note on the left, then click Recover in the toolbar. The note moves to the Notes folder.

To recover directly to a folder other than Notes, drag a note from the Recently Deleted folder to another folder.

Note: If you delete a shared note that you do not own, the note does not move to your Recently Deleted folder. For more information, see Delete shared notes.

Permanently remove recently deleted notes

If you’re using upgraded notes, you can immediately and permanently remove iCloud notes you deleted in the last 30 days on iCloud.com or your devices with iOS 9 or later or OS X 10.11 or later that use the same iCloud account. After you permanently remove notes, they can’t be recovered.

  1. Select Recently Deleted on the left.

If you don’t see Recently Deleted in the folder list on the left, you don’t have any recently deleted notes.

If you don’t see a folder list to the left of the notes list, you’re not using upgraded notes and therefore can’t recover deleted notes.

  2. Select a note you want to permanently remove.

  3. If you’re sure you want to permanently remove the selected note from all your devices, click the Trash button in the toolbar.

The selected note is removed immediately.

Notes you leave in the Recently Deleted folder for 30 days are permanently removed for you.
