iCloud: View and change Family Sharing settings

View and change Family Sharing settings

With Family Sharing, up to six family members can share each others’ iTunes, iBooks, and App Store purchases, an Apple Music family membership, and an iCloud storage plan. Family members can share their locations using Find My Friends and Messages, and help locate each others’ devices with Find My iPhone. Family Sharing also provides useful features to keep your family connected — including a shared photo album, family calendar, and reminders.

Note: Family members can also choose not to share their purchases. They can also choose to keep their own iCloud storage plan.

To use Family Sharing, one adult family member (the organizer) chooses features for your family to share and invites up to five additional family members to participate. Once family members join, Family Sharing is set up on everyone’s devices automatically.

Family Sharing also allows parents to set up Apple IDs for children under 13. To control spending by kids, the organizer can require approval for any purchases or free downloads requested by non-adult family members.

You change Family Sharing settings and manage other family members using your iOS device (iOS 8 or later) or Mac (OS X 10.10 or later).

Set up Family Sharing

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click iCloud.

  2. Click Set Up Family, then follow the onscreen instructions.

Join a family group

Only the organizer can add family members. If the organizer adds you to the group, you’ll receive an invitation via Messages or email.

  • On your Mac or iOS device, follow the instructions in the message or email.

View family members

Join Family Sharing on your iOS device or Mac (if you haven’t done so already), then do any of the following:

  • On an iOS device: Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud (or Settings > iCloud), then tap Family Sharing.

  • On a Mac: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click iCloud, then click Manage Family.

  • On iCloud.com: Go to Settings, then look at the Family Sharing section.

Change Family Sharing settings

You can manage your Family Sharing settings, including whether to share your purchases with family members.

  • On an iOS device: Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud (or Settings > iCloud), tap Family, then tap your name.

  • On a Mac: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click iCloud, click Manage Family, then select your name on the left.

Manage other Family Sharing members

If you set up Family Sharing, you’re the family organizer and can add and remove family members, choose whether a child must have purchases approved, and designate another parent who can approve children’s purchases.

  • On an iOS device: Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud (or Settings > iCloud), then tap Family.

  • On a Mac: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click iCloud, then click Manage Family.

Family Sharing is designed to be used by a single family (adults and children). You can be part of only one family group at a time, and may switch to a different family group only twice per year. Features may vary based on country.

For more information, go to Basics > Sharing > Family Sharing in the user guide for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Or, on a Mac, click the Finder icon in the Dock, choose Help > Mac Help, then search for Set up Family Sharing.
