Read email in iCloud Mail

iCloud Mail automatically checks for new messages and puts them in your Inbox. Messages you receive are shown in the main Mail window when using Mail on iCloud.com.

Note: If you want your iCloud email to appear on your devices, they must have the iCloud Mail feature turned on. For more information, see Set up iCloud Mail on your devices.

Read your iCloud Mail using a web browser

  • Click Inbox, then do one of the following:

    • Read a message: Select the message in your message list.

    • Open a message in a new window: Double-click the message in the message list.

    • See a list of messages in a different mail folder: Click the folder in the sidebar. For example, click Sent in the sidebar to see a list of messages you sent.

In your message list, messages are labeled with the following icons:



A message is unread.

A message contains an attachment.

A message that you replied to. To see your reply, click the arrow.

A message that you forwarded. To see your forwarded message, click the arrow.

A message that you flagged. For more information, see Flag important emails in iCloud Mail.

A message sent by a VIP. For more information see Make a sender a VIP in iCloud Mail.

A message marked as junk mail. For more information, see Manage junk mail in iCloud Mail.

Change how your emails appear

  • Change the email window’s appearance: Click the Switch View button  above the message list to toggle between one of the following options:

    • Widescreen (three-column)

      In Widescreen view, you can see your mail folders in the sidebar.

    • Compact (two-column)

      In Compact view, the sidebar is collapsed. However, you can navigate to your mail folders by clicking the pop-up menu above the message list.

  • Control whether or not HTML images are loaded automatically when a message is viewed: Click the Action pop-up menu in the sidebar, then choose Preferences. In the General pane, select “Load remote content in messages,” then click Done.

    When “Load remote content in messages” isn’t selected, you need to click “Load images” to view the images in a message.

You can also modify other aspects of how your emails appear in iCloud Mail preferences. Click the Action pop-up menu in the sidebar, then choose Preferences.
