Download apps on your Mac

Your Mac can open apps from two sources: the App Store, which is built in and requires no setup, and the web, where developers distribute apps directly. The App Store is the easiest place to start — apps are reviewed by Apple, and updates happen automatically.

Get apps from the App Store

To open the App Store, click its icon in the Dock or the Applications folder. Browse by category, or use the search field at the top to find a specific app. To download a free app, click Get, then click Install. To buy an app, click the price, then confirm with Touch ID or your Apple Account password.

Tip: Your Mac can also use many iPhone and iPad apps. In the App Store, click iPhone & iPad Apps in the sidebar to browse apps you’ve already purchased on your other devices.

Apps you download from the App Store appear in Launchpad and in your Applications folder. To open Launchpad, click its icon in the Dock, then click any app to open it.

Install apps from the web

Some apps are available directly from the developer’s website rather than the App Store. To install an app from the web, download it in Safari — the file usually ends in .dmg or .pkg. Open the downloaded file from the Downloads folder or the download indicator in the Safari toolbar, then follow the instructions to complete installation.

Note: Your Mac may ask you to confirm that you want to open an app downloaded from the web. This is a security check. If you trust the source, click Open to proceed. If you’re unsure, don’t open it.

To find your downloaded files, click the Finder icon in the Dock, then click Downloads in the sidebar. You can also press Option-Command-L in Safari to open the Downloads list.
