Intro to FileVault
Overview
FileVault protects your organization’s data if a Mac is lost or stolen by making its contents unreadable without valid credentials. FileVault encryption is powered by Apple FIPS-validated cryptographic modules, ensuring compliance with high-assurance United States federal standards by using the AES-XTS data encryption algorithm to help protect full volumes on internal storage devices.
Internal storage directly connected to the Secure Enclave leverages its hardware security capabilities and use a hierarchy of keys to encrypt its data. This hierarchy of keys is designed to simultaneously achieve four goals:
Require the user’s password for decryption
Protect the operating system from a brute-force attack directly against storage media removed from Mac
Provide a swift and secure method for wiping content by deleting necessary cryptographic material
Enable users to change their password without requiring reencryption of the entire volume
On a Mac with Apple silicon and those with the Apple T2 Security Chip, all FileVault key handling occurs in the Secure Enclave. Encryption keys are never directly exposed to the CPU. After a user turns on FileVault on a Mac, their credentials are required during the boot process. On a Mac with Apple silicon and with macOS 26 or later, FileVault can be unlocked over ssh after a restart if Remote Login is turned on and a network connection is available.
Important: Encryption of removable storage devices doesn’t utilize the security capabilities of the Secure Enclave.
