Change the voice your Mac uses to speak text
You can change the voice your Mac uses to speak text that’s on the screen, or adjust how the voice sounds and how it pronounces certain words.
Use a different voice
You can change the voice your Mac uses to read text out loud, or change what language your Mac uses to speak text.
Note: Voices are not available in all languages. See the Apple Support article Languages supported by VoiceOver.
On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Accessibility in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
Click Spoken Content.
Click the “System voice” pop-up menu, then choose a voice. For more voices, click next to “System voice”, click the name of the voice on the right, then do any of the following:
Add a new voice: Click the name of the voice. If is shown next to the voice, it’s automatically downloaded from Apple (you must be connected to the internet).
To show more voices for the current language, such as for another country or region, you may need to scroll down.
Sample a voice: Click next to the name of the voice.
Find a voice for another language: Click the name of the language in the sidebar, then click the name of the voice on the right to see more voices.
When you’ve finished adding voices, click Done.
To change the language your Mac uses to speak text, click the “System speech language” pop-up menu, then choose a language.
To use a voice you added, click the “System voice” pop-up menu, then choose the voice.
Voices that are downloaded aren’t available until the download is complete.
Adjust how a voice sounds
On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Accessibility in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
Click Spoken Content.
Do any of the following:
Adjust the sound of the voice: Click next to “System voice”, then adjust settings for the voice, such as how fast or loud it speaks. Click to hear a sample.
Adjust how the voice pronounces certain words: Turn on Pronunciations, then click to define a custom pronunciation. You can dictate or spell out how you want the word to be spoken.
Delete a downloaded voice
You can delete a voice that you downloaded to your Mac.
On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Accessibility in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
Click Spoken Content.
Click next to “System voice”, then click the name of the voice.
Use your mouse or trackpad to swipe left on the voice you want to delete, then click Delete.
