Use Full Calibration in the Pro Display Calibrator
If you want to fully recalibrate your display using a supported spectroradiometer, you can use the Full Calibration option in the Pro Display Calibrator.
Note: This feature is only available for Apple Pro Display XDR, Apple Studio Display, the 14-inch MacBook Pro (2021 or later) or the 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021 or later).
Before you begin
Before you start Full Calibration, do the following:
Make sure your Mac has the latest version of macOS.
Make sure your external display has the latest firmware. See the Apple Support article What’s new in firmware updates for Apple Pro Display XDR and the Apple Support article What’s new in firmware updates for Apple Studio Display.
Connect your Mac to the display you would like to calibrate. Connecting your display with an Apple Thunderbolt cable is recommended when using the Pro Display Calibrator.
If you’re calibrating a MacBook Pro display, connect the device to power before starting the calibration process.
Connect a supported spectroradiometer or colorimeter to your Mac. The following instruments can be used with the Pro Display Calibrator:
Photo Research: PR-740, PR-745, or PR-788. (Recommended bandwidths are 4nm or 5nm and required apertures are 0.1, 0.125, 0.2 or 0.25.)
Colorimetry Research: CR-300, CR-250 or CR-100.
Make sure the room is well ventilated and either dim or dark.
Make sure the display is at a typical ambient temperature, placed away from any flowing air, such as an air-conditioning duct or the exhaust vent from other equipment.
For CR-100: Create a matrix profile for your Apple display using the software provided by the manufacturer of your colorimeter. See the documentation that came with your colorimeter for more information.
Tip: If you want to establish a baseline for your display, measure your display before and after calibration. Use the same spectroradiometer for both measuring and calibration. See the Apple Support article Measure the calibration of your MacBook Pro with Liquid Retina XDR display, Apple Studio Display or Apple Pro Display XDR.
Complete Full Calibration
On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Displays in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
Click the display that you want to recalibrate, click the Preset pop-up menu, then click Calibrate Display.
After the Pro Display Calibrator opens, click Full Calibration, then click Next.
Follow the onscreen instructions to begin calibration process. Calibration may take up to 2 hours to complete, which includes a 30-minute warm-up period. After the calibration is complete, click Done.
Note: If your Mac has more than one display connected, you can see the calibration status on the display that isn’t being calibrated. If you’re calibrating your only connected display, you can’t see the status during the calibration process. Calibration includes a stabilisation process where the affected display is black for a period of time. You do receive a message when the calibration process is complete.
