Listen to music on your Apple Watch

You can listen to Apple Music, control the music playing on your iPhone, and manage playlists for your Apple Watch.

You can listen to Apple Music on your Apple Watch Series 3 with a Wi-Fi or cellular connection, use any Apple Watch to control the music on your iPhone, and sync playlists to your Apple Watch to enjoy without your iPhone.

Listen to Apple Music

Before you start listening, pair your watch with Bluetooth headphones.

If you're an Apple Music subscriber, your Apple Watch Series 3 can automatically access your music library. Open the Music app on your Apple Watch and scroll up, then tap Library. You can also use Siri to play any song in the Apple Music catalog and listen to custom stations in the Radio app.

If you're not an Apple Music subscriber, you can enjoy some music on your Apple Watch. Learn how to add albums and playlists to your watch.

Control music on your iPhone

When your paired iPhone is in range, you can use your Apple Watch to control what's playing on your iPhone. Use your iPhone to start playing music. Then, open Now Playing in the Dock.

The name of the device that you currently control appears in the top-left corner of your watch. If you don't see a device icon, you need to start playing music from your iPhone.

Sync albums and playlists to your Apple Watch

You can add specific albums and playlists to your Apple Watch by syncing them. After you sync, you can play the music on your Apple Watch without your iPhone.

  1. Set your Apple Watch on its charger and make sure that the device is charging.
  2. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
  3. On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, then tap the My Watch tab.
  4. Tap Music >  Add Music.
  5. Choose the albums and playlists that you want to sync.

Under the Automatically Add section, you can turn playlists off or on. Music that's in heavy rotation is automatically added to your Apple Watch. And if you're an Apple Music subscriber, the Favorites Mix and New Music Mix playlists are automatically added to Apple Watch. Other mixes based on the music that you like might appear as well.

If you can't add specific albums or playlists, try downloading them to your iPhone first before syncing with your watch. You can't add audiobooks or podcasts to your watch.
