Listen to music on your Apple Watch

Learn how to manage playlists and listen to music on your Apple Watch.

You can use your Apple Watch to control music on your iPhone, or you can enjoy music on your Apple Watch without your iPhone.

Control music on your iPhone

When your paired iPhone is in range, you can use your Apple Watch to control what's playing on your iPhone. Press the side button, then tap Now Playing in the Dock. 

The name of the device that you currently control appears in the top-left corner. 

Play music from your Apple Watch

You can enjoy music on your Apple Watch without your iPhone when you pair with Bluetooth headphones. Open the Music app, then choose what to play, including your synced content from Apple Music.

To sync playlists and albums, use these steps.

Make a music playlist

  1. On your iPhone, open the Music app.
  2. Tap the Library tab, then tap Playlists > New Playlist.
  3. Name your playlist, then tap Add Music. 
  4. Search or tap to find songs, artists, or albums. When you find something to add, tap Plus icon.
  5. After you add the item, tap Done. Then search for more music to add. 
  6. When you're finished adding music, tap Done to save your playlist.

Learn more about playlists. You can add playlists and albums to your Apple Watch, but audiobooks and podcasts aren't compatible.

Sync your playlist

  1. Set your Apple Watch on its charger and make sure the device is charging.
  2. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
  3. On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, then tap the My Watch tab.
  4. Tap Music > Add Music.
  5. Choose the albums and playlists that you want to sync. 

Under the Automatically Add section, you can turn playlists off or on. Music that's in heavy rotation is automatically added to your Apple Watch. If youʼre an Apple Music member, the My Favorites Mix, My Chill Mix, and My New Music Mix playlists are automatically added to Apple Watch. Other playlists by Apple Music experts might appear as well.  

You might need to download any music stored in the cloud, such as music from Apple Music or iTunes Match, to your iPhone before you can sync it with your Apple Watch.

Create a workout playlist

  1. On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, then tap the My Watch tab.
  2. Tap Workout > Workout Playlist. 
  3. Choose a playlist.

This playlist automatically plays when you start a workout, unless you're already listening to something else. Workout playlists are available on Apple Watch Series 1 or later.

Remove music from your Apple Watch

  1. On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, then tap the My Watch tab.
  2. Tap Music, then tap Edit.
  3. Under Playlists & Albums, tap minus icon next to any music that you don't want, then tap Delete. You can also turn off any automatically added playlists that you don't want. 
  4. When you're finished, tap Done.

Hide Now Playing

When you play music, Now Playing automatically opens. Here's how to change the setting: 

  1. Open the Apple Watch app and tap the My Watch tab. 
  2. Tap General > Wake Screen. 
  3. Turn off Auto-launch Audio Apps.
