Mac Pro (Rack, 2023) Logic Board with Internal Frame

Before You Begin

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • #1 Phillips screwdriver

  • Adjustable torque driver (0.3-1.2 Nm)

  • Adjustable torque driver (10-34 Ncm)

  • Cut-resistant gloves

  • Ethernet cable

  • Kapton tape

  • Torx Plus 5IP 50 mm bit

  • Torx Plus 8IP 25 mm bit

  • Torx Plus 8IP 89 mm bit

 Caution

Removal

  1. Use the 10-34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to remove the two 5IP screws (923-03412) from the front input/output (I/O) board connector cowling on the logic board side. Remove the cowling and save it for reassembly.

  2. Lift the two ends of the front I/O board flex cable off the connectors on the logic board.

  3. Use the black stick to loosen the adhesive between the front I/O board flex cable and the logic board.

  4. Use Kapton tape to tape the front I/O board flex cable to the housing as shown. Taping the flex cable will avoid damaging it while removing the logic board with internal frame.

  5. Use the 0.3-1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 8IP 25 mm bit to remove the 16 8IP screws (923-03430), eight from each side of the housing.

  6. Put on the cut-resistant gloves. Slide the logic board slightly toward the front plate, just enough to clear the rear panel (1). Hold the bottom of the logic board plate on the bottom left side and the top of the PCI Express (PCIe) slots frame on the top right side. Then gently lift the logic board with internal frame out of the housing (2).

    •  Warning: Ensure that you wear the cut-resistant gloves while removing the logic board to avoid pinching your fingers.

    •  Caution: Don’t damage the front I/O board flex cable while sliding the logic board toward the front plate and lifting it out of the housing.

    • Important

      • If you’re replacing only the logic board, remove the Apple Thunderbolt I/O board and Apple I/O card, SSD modules, and Speaker. Then continue to step 7.

      • If you’re replacing only the top internal frame or PCIe slots frame, complete removal steps 7 through 19. Then skip to the reassembly step 8.

      • If you’re replacing only the bottom internal frame, complete removal steps 7 through 13. Complete reassembly step 8. Then skip to reassembly step 15.

      • If you’re reinstalling the existing logic board with internal frame, skip to reassembly step 23.

  7. Use the #1 Phillips screwdriver to fully loosen the two #1 Phillips screws on the upper clamp plate. Then remove the upper clamp plate and save it for reassembly.

    • Note: The two #1 Phillips screws are captive and stay attached to the upper clamp plate.

  8. Remove any remaining PCIe slot covers.

  9. Stand up the logic board frame so that the blower is facing you. Then use the 0.3-1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 8IP 89 mm bit to remove the four 8IP screws (923-03436) from the top of the logic board.

    •  Caution: Don’t use the edges of the PCIe slots frame handles when standing up the logic board frame. Use the stiffeners (along the edges on the blower side of the logic board) as handles to stand up, lay down, or rotate the logic board frame.

  10. Use the 0.3-1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 8IP 89 mm bit to remove the four 8IP screws (923-03409) from the left side of the logic board.

  11. Remove the PCIe intake from the logic board.

  12. Lay the logic board on the table with the heat sink faceup.

  13. Use the 0.3-1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 8IP 89 mm bit to remove the five 8IP screws (923-03436) from the bottom of the logic board. Then remove the bottom internal frame from the logic board.

  14. Use the 0.3-1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 8IP 89 mm bit to remove the two 8IP screws (923-03410) from the heat sink cover.

  15. Remove the heat sink cover.

  16. Use the 0.3-1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 8IP 89 mm bit to remove the two 8IP screws (923-08637) from the top of the heat sink.

  17. Use the 0.3-1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 8IP 89 mm bit to remove the two 8IP screws (923-08623) from the top internal frame.

  18. Remove the heat sink shim and save it for reassembly.

  19. Remove the top internal frame and PCIe slots frame from the logic board.

  20. Use the 0.3-1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and the 8IP 89 mm bit to remove the four 8IP screws (923-09222) from the logic board plate. Remove the plate and save it for reassembly.

Reassembly

Important

If you’re installing a replacement logic board, continue to step 1. If you’re reinstalling the existing logic board, skip to step 23.

 Caution

If you’re installing a replacement logic board, don’t discard the bracket attached to the top of the replacement part. The bracket must be transferred to the existing logic board before returning to Apple Service to prevent damage during shipping.

  1. Use the 0.3-1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 8IP 89 mm bit to remove the two 8IP screws from the bracket attached to the top of the replacement logic board. Remove the bracket and set it aside.

  2. Transfer the bracket to the same location on the existing logic board. Then use the 0.3-1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 8IP 89 mm bit to install the two 8IP screws into the bracket.

  3. Place the existing logic board inside the reused ESD-safe bag.

  4. Position the packaged logic board in the foam frame.

  5. Close and seal the box. Ship the box to Apple Service.

  6. Position the logic board plate on the logic board.

  7. Set the torque value of the 0.3-1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver to 0.5 Nm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 8IP 89 mm bit to reinstall the four 8IP screws (923-09222) into the logic board plate.

  8. Insert the PCIe intake into the logic board.

    • Note: This image shows the bottom internal frame installed. But you won’t install it until step 15.

  9. Position the top internal frame and PCIe slots frame on the logic board.

  10. Insert the heat sink shim.

  11. Set the torque value of the 0.3-1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver to 1.2 Nm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 8IP 89 mm bit to reinstall the two 8IP screws (923-08623) into the top internal frame.

  12. Set the torque value of the 0.3-1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver to 0.5 Nm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 8IP 89 mm bit to reinstall the two 8IP screws (923-08637) into the top of the heat sink.

  13. Position the heat sink cover on the heat sink.

  14. Keep the torque value of the 0.3-1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver at 0.5 Nm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 8IP 89 mm bit to reinstall the two 8IP screws (923-03410) into the heat sink cover.

  15. Align the bottom of the PCIe slots frame with the three rubber gaskets on the bottom internal frame as shown.

  16. Keep the torque value of the 0.3-1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver at 0.5 Nm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 8IP 89 mm bit to reinstall the five 8IP screws (923-03436) into the bottom of the logic board.

  17. Stand up the logic board frame so the blower is facing you. Then plug both ends of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet ports to ensure logic board alignment.

    •  Caution: Don’t use the edges of the PCIe slots frame handles when standing up the logic board frame. Use the stiffeners (along the edges on the blower side of the logic board) as handles to stand up, lay down, or rotate the logic board frame.

  18. Keep the torque value of the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver at 0.5 Nm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 8IP 89 mm bit to reinstall the eight 8IP screws (923-03436) (1) (923-03409) (2) into the top and left side of the logic board frame.

    • Important: Keep both ends of the Ethernet cable plugged into the Ethernet ports while reinstalling the screws.

  19. Remove the Ethernet cable from the Ethernet ports.

  20. Insert the PCIe slot covers into the same PCIe slots they were removed from.

  21. Position the upper clamp plate as shown. Then use the #1 Phillips screwdriver to fully tighten the two #1 Phillips screws.

  22. If you replaced the logic board, reinstall the following parts. Then continue to step 23.

  23. Ensure that the front I/O board flex cable is still taped to the housing to avoid damaging the flex cable while reinstalling the logic board.

  24. Put on the cut-resistant gloves. Hold the bottom of the logic board plate on the bottom left side and the top of the PCIe slots frame on the top right side. Gently lower the logic board into the housing (1). Then slide the logic board slightly toward the rear panel (2).

    •  Warning: Ensure that you wear the cut-resistant gloves while positioning the logic board in the housing to avoid pinching your fingers.

    •  Caution: Don’t damage the front I/O board flex cable while lowering the logic board into the housing and sliding it toward the rear panel.

  25. Set the torque value of the 0.3-1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver to 0.5 Nm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 8IP 25 mm bit to reinstall the 16 8IP screws (923-03430), eight into each side of the housing.

  26. Press the two ends of the front I/O board flex cable to the connectors on the logic board. Then press on the flex cable to adhere it to the logic board as shown.

  27. Position the front I/O board connector cowling over the two ends of the front I/O board flex cable.

    • Important: Ensure that the right side of the cowling is aligned with the edge of the logic board plate as shown.

  28. Set the torque value of the 10-34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 16 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall the two 5IP screws (923-03412) into the front I/O board connector cowling.

 Caution

  • After you’ve completed all removal and reassembly steps, learn how to initiate the System Configuration process.

  • If you replaced the logic board, the computer won’t start up and the status indicator light will flash amber. Follow the instructions to restore the Mac. Then initiate the System Configuration process.

Reinstall the following parts to complete reassembly:
