Mac Pro (2023) and Mac Pro (Rack, 2023) System Fans

Before You Begin

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • Adjustable torque driver (0.3–1.2 Nm)

  • Torx Plus 8IP 25 mm bit

  • Torx Plus 8IP 89 mm bit

Removal

  1. Slide the bottom SSD module cover latch to the left (1) and pull the bottom SSD module cover toward you (2) to remove it from the computer. Save the bottom SSD module cover for reassembly.

  2. Squeeze the top and bottom of the blower duct to release the left side of the blower duct.

  3. Press the two areas shown to release the two clips on the right edge of the blower duct.

  4. Remove the blower duct from the computer.

  5. Use the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 8IP 25 mm bit to remove the long 8IP screw (923-03405) (1) from the logic board.

  6. Use the adjustable torque driver and 8IP 25 mm bit to remove the two short 8IP screws (923-03404) (2) from the logic board.

  7. Rotate the space frame 180 degrees. Use the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 8IP 89 mm bit to remove the 8IP screw from the bottom of the system fans.

    • Note: The screw number is specific to the model.

      • Mac Pro (2023) (923-03418)

      • Mac Pro (Rack, 2023) (923-03433)

    • Important: Ensure that you insert the adjustable torque driver and 8IP 89 mm bit in the screw head at an angle. Remove the 8IP screw slowly to avoid stripping the screwhead and screw thread. Ensure that you remove the screw straight up and out of the screw hole.

  8. Use the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver and 8IP 25 mm bit to remove the two 8IP screws (923-03417) from the top of the system fans.

    • Caution: If you're repairing a Mac Pro (2023), don’t damage the top input/output (I/O) board flex cable when removing the system fans.

  9. Pull the top and bottom of the system fans away from the logic board evenly to disengage the system fans from the system fans alignment pin.

  10. Pull the system fans out of the space frame. If you’re repairing a Mac Pro (2023), pull the system fans out of the space frame at the angle shown to avoid damaging the top I/O board flex cable.

Reassembly

  1. Inspect the three sets of contact springs for damage.

    • Caution: If the contact springs are damaged, you must replace the logic board.

  2. Insert the system fans into the space frame. If you’re repairing a Mac Pro (2023), insert the system fans into the space frame at the angle shown to avoid damaging the top I/O board flex cable.

  3. Align the system fans with the lower screw holes in the logic board. Firmly push the system fans against the logic board to engage the system fans alignment pin.

  4. Rotate the space frame 180 degrees so the blower is facing you.

  5. Set the torque value on the 0.3–1.2 Nm adjustable torque driver to 0.55 Nm. Use the adjustable torque driver and 8IP 25 mm bit to reinstall the long 8IP screw (923-03405) (1) into the logic board. Use the adjustable torque driver and 8IP 25 mm bit to reinstall the two short 8IP screws (923-03404) (2) into the logic board.

  6. Remove the 8IP 25 mm bit from the adjustable torque driver. Use only the 8IP 25 mm bit to partially reinstall the 8IP screw into the bottom of the system fans.

    • Note: The screw number is specific to the model.

      • Mac Pro (2023) (923-03418)

      • Mac Pro (Rack, 2023) (923-03433)

  7. Keep the adjustable torque driver value at 0.55 Nm. Use the adjustable torque driver and 8IP 89 mm bit to fully reinstall the 8IP screw into the bottom of the system fans.

    • Important: Ensure that the screw is installed straight down in the screw hole.

  8. Keep the adjustable torque driver value at 0.55 Nm. Use the adjustable torque driver and 8IP 25 mm bit to reinstall two 8IP screws (923-03417) into the top of the system fans.

  9. Insert the two clips on the left side of the blower duct into the slots on the logic board.

    • Note: The image shows the system fans screws removed. However, you must reinstall the screws before reinstalling the blower duct.

  10. Squeeze the top and bottom of the blower duct to insert the tab hook on the left side of the blower duct into the slot in the logic board.

  11. Slide the bottom SSD module cover latch to the left (1). Position the bottom SSD module cover over the opening. Then push the left edge of the bottom SSD module cover to lock it into place (2).
