Using your Suica or PASMO card for transit

You can use Suica or PASMO with Apple Pay for transit anywhere that you can use a physical Suica or PASMO card or where interoperable IC cards are accepted. If your Suica or PASMO card is set as your Express Transit card, simply hold the top of your iPhone or Apple Watch within a few centimeters of the ticket gate scanner when you enter and exit. Your iPhone or Apple Watch must be turned on, but it doesn't have to be connected to a network. You don't need to wake or unlock your device or open an app when you enter or exit the ticket gates. You'll see Done and a checkmark on the display.

On your compatible iPhone with the latest iOS version, Express Cards with power reserve might be available for up to five hours when your iPhone needs to be charged, depending on your device. You can press the side button to check if Express Cards are available when your iPhone needs to be charged. Doing this often may significantly reduce or fully deplete the power reserve for Express Cards. If you choose to power off your iPhone, this feature will not be available.

How to pay for transit with PASMO

If your Suica or PASMO card isn't set up for Express Transit, you need to use Face ID or Touch ID when you enter or exit the ticket gates. On Apple Watch, double-click the side button to access your cards, and swipe to select your Suica or PASMO card. Then, hold the display up to the ticket gate scanner when you enter and exit.

You might need to have a station agent service your Suica card in Apple Pay. If you do, put your device into Service Mode before you hand it to the station agent:

  • On your iPhone, open Wallet, select your card, tap the more button , then open Service Mode.
  • For your Apple Watch, remove it from your wrist, enter the passcode to unlock it, and double-click the side button. Then, select your card, firmly press the screen, tap Service Mode, and ask the station agent to hold your Watch with the display facing down.
