Problems using a Managed Apple ID with iTunes U for web
Learn about the differences between using a personal Apple ID and a Managed Apple ID when you use iTunes U for web.
Like a personal Apple ID, you can use a Managed Apple ID to sign in to a personal device, sign in to a shared device, or to access Apple services including iCloud, iTunes U, and Apple School Manager. Unlike personal Apple IDs, Managed Apple IDs are owned and controlled by a school or district. The institution can reset passwords, limit purchasing and communications, and set up role-based administration.
Some iTunes U services and features are different for Managed Apple IDs.
Course institution
When you create a course using a Managed Apple ID, iTunes U uses the institution specified in Apple School Manager as the course institution.
You cannot edit the course institution associated with your Apple School Manager organization.
Student roster
To enroll in a course using a Managed Apple ID, both you and the instructor who created the course must be associated with the same organization in Apple School Manager.
Contributors you add to your course cannot manage the roster or course enrollment.
When you create a course using a Managed Apple ID:
If you imported the roster by selecting an Apple School Manager class, the Apple School Manager class information is the roster of record for your course. You cannot remove students or reset the roster within iTunes U. If the Apple School Manager class information is updated (for example, a student is removed or added), iTunes U updates your roster the next time it syncs class information.
If you choose to manually enter information about the course, you can create your roster by importing students from your Apple School Manager classes or by allowing students to manually request enrollment. If you allow students to manually request enrollment, they must use a Managed Apple ID associated with the same organization as the instructor in Apple School Manager.
Course materials
If you want to use iTunes U materials you created before your school or district began using Apple School Manager with Managed Apple IDs, Apple recommends you:
Send a copy of the course to your Managed Apple ID.
Re-upload any materials not associated with a course using your Managed Apple ID.
Transferring courses
To transfer ownership of a course created using a Managed Apple ID, both you and the new owner must be associated with the same organization in Apple School Manager.
To transfer ownership of a course created using a Managed Apple ID and a roster imported from an Apple School Manager class, you must use Apple School Manager to transfer the course to an alternate iTunes U instructor.
If the owner of a course created using a Managed Apple ID is no longer associated with the Apple School Manager organization (for example, the instructor retires), iTunes U automatically transfers the course to an alternate iTunes U instructor listed in the Apple School Manager class information.
You cannot transfer an unmanaged course to a Managed Apple ID instructor.
Course contributors
To invite a contributor to a course created using a Managed Apple ID, both you and the contributor must be associated with the same organization in Apple School Manager or the contributor’s iTunes U Public Site Manager institution must be linked to your Apple School Manager organization.
To link a contributor’s iTunes U Public Site Manager institution to your Apple School Manager organization, submit a support request at https://www.apple.com/support/itunes-u/public-site-manager/contact.html.
You cannot invite a student of a managed course to also be a contributor for the course.
