Listen and respond to messages with AirPods
Use your AirPods (2nd or 3rd generation), AirPods Pro (all generations), or AirPods Max to listen to messages from your iPhone or iPad. When your device is locked, your AirPods are connected to it, and a message arrives, a chime sounds and you can use Siri to read the message.
Turn on Announce Messages
If you didn’t turn on Announce Messages on your device when you set up your AirPods (2nd or 3rd generation), AirPods Pro (all generations), or AirPods Max, you can do so at any time.
On your device, go to Settings > Notifications > Messages, then turn on Announce Notifications.
You can also choose what kinds of notifications you want announced.
Note: To turn on Announce Messages, you must first turn on Announce Notifications in Settings > Notifications.
Reply to a message
After using Siri to read a message, say something like “Reply that’s great news.”
Your message is repeated, and you’re asked for confirmation before it’s sent.
Reply without waiting for confirmation
For apps where you can send a reply, like the Messages app , Siri repeats what you said, then asks for confirmation before sending your reply.
To send replies without waiting for confirmation, do any of the following:
On iPhone or iPad: Go to Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications, then turn on Reply Without Confirmation.
On Apple Watch: Go to Settings > Siri > Announce Notifications, then turn on Reply Without Confirmation.
Stop using Siri to read a message
You can do any of the following:
AirPods (2nd generation): Say something like “Stop” or “Cancel,” or double-tap either of your AirPods.
AirPods (3rd generation) and AirPods Pro (1st generation): Press the force sensor.
AirPods Pro (2nd generation): Press the Touch control.
AirPods Max: Press the Digital Crown.
