Before You Begin

Warning

Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

Remove the following parts before you begin:

Tools

  • ESD-safe tweezers

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Kapton tape

  • Torque driver (blue, 0.65 kgf cm)

  • Torx Plus 1IP 44 mm half-moon bit

  • Torx Plus 3IP 44 mm half-moon bit

  • Touch ID alignment kit

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

  1. Stand the computer on its bottom edge and press the Touch ID button to sense its movement.

  2. Close the computer and place it facedown on a clean surface.

  3. Using the blue torque driver and 1IP bit, loosen the Touch ID board set screw by turning it counterclockwise one turn.

  4. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to remove the four inner 3IP screws (452-12979) from the Touch ID board cowling.

  5. Use the blue torque driver and 1IP bit to remove the four outer 1IP screws (452-13077) from the Touch ID board cowling.

  6. Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove the Touch ID board cowling from the top case.

  7. Lift the top case to remove the Touch ID button as shown.

Reassembly

Important

Ensure that a new keyboard is installed in the top case before beginning reassembly.

  1. Place the Touch ID button facedown on a clean surface. Then lower the top case over the Touch ID button while routing the Touch ID board flex cable through the opening in the top case as shown.

    • Caution: Ensure that the Touch ID board flex cable isn't trapped under the top case as you lower the top case onto the surface.

  2. Position the Touch ID board cowling in the top case.

    • Caution: Ensure that the Touch ID board cowling is installed with the proper orientation as shown.

  3. Use the blue torque driver and 1IP bit to partially reinstall the four outer 1IP screws (452-13077) into the Touch ID board cowling.

  4. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to partially reinstall the four inner 3IP screws (452-12979) into the Touch ID board cowling.

  5. Turn the computer faceup. Then rest only the bottom edge of the computer on the surface as shown.

  6. Install the Touch ID alignment tools as shown.

  7. Use Kapton tape to secure the Touch ID alignment tools to the top case.

  8. Use the blue torque driver and 1IP bit to fully reinstall the four outer 1IP screws into the Touch ID board cowling in the order shown.

  9. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to fully reinstall the four inner 3IP screws into the Touch ID board cowling in the order shown.

  10. Turn the computer faceup with only the bottom edge of the computer on the surface as shown. Then remove the Kapton tape and Touch ID alignment tools from the Touch ID button.

  11. Check the alignment of the Touch ID button.

    • If the Touch ID button is centered in the opening in the top case, skip to step 15.

    • If the Touch ID button isn't centered in the opening in the top case, continue to step 12.

  12. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to loosen the four inner 3IP screws in the Touch ID board cowling.

  13. Use the blue torque driver and 1IP bit to loosen the four outer 1IP screws in the Touch ID board cowling.

  14. Repeat steps 5 through 11.

  15. Use the blue torque driver and 1IP bit to adjust the Touch ID board set screw.

  16. Then stand the computer on its bottom edge and press the Touch ID button to sense its movement.

    • If the movement of the button matches the movement from removal step 1, reassembly is complete.

    • If the movement of the button doesn't match the movement from removal step 1, continue to adjust the Touch ID board set screw and press the Touch ID button until the button moves properly.

Reinstall the following parts to complete reassembly:

Note: The keyboard shield, trackpad interposer flex cable, and Touch ID interposer flex cable will be installed as new parts.
