Before You Begin

Warning

  • Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.

  • A battery should be replaced only by individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. Improper battery replacement, improper handling of parts, or failure to follow the provided instructions could result in fire, injury, data loss, or damage to the device, parts, or other property.

  • Don't connect the computer to an external power source during repair.

Remove the following part before you begin:

Tools

  • Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)

  • Nylon probe (black stick)

  • Torx Plus 5IP 50 mm bit

Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.

Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

  1. Use the flat end of the black stick to lift the ends of the right speaker, audio board, and left speaker flex cables off the connectors.

  2. Gently lift the left speaker flex cable from the top case.

  3. Gently lift the right speaker flex cable from the top case.

  4. Remove the battery cover.

  5. Gently peel the audio board flex cable to release the adhesive between the flex cable and the top of the battery tray. Then lift the flex cable from the top case.

  6. Move the left speaker, right speaker, and audio board flex cables out of the way. Then place the battery cover on the battery by attaching the magnetic clips to the mushroom set screws.

  7. Use the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to remove the 18 5IP screws (923-14176) from the battery.

    • Caution

      • Don't remove the alignment set screws, outlined in red below.

      • Don't damage the audio board flex cable or speaker flex cables when removing the screws.

  8. Remove the battery cover.

  9. Push the battery tray to the left and use the flat end of the black stick to lift the left side of the battery as shown. Then remove the battery from the top case as shown.

    • Caution: Ensure that you clear the audio board flex cable and speaker flex cables before lifting the battery out of the top case to avoid damaging the cables.

Reassembly

  1. Lower the battery into the top case as shown, using the alignment set screws to align the battery with the top case.

    • Caution: Keep the audio board flex cable and speaker flex cables clear of the battery as you lower it into the top case.

  2. Place the battery cover on the battery by attaching the magnetic clips to the mushroom set screws.

  3. Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 17.5 Ncm. Then use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall two 5IP screws (923-14176) into the battery in the order shown.

  4. Use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall the remaining 16 5IP screws (923-14176) into the battery.

  5. Remove the battery cover.

  6. Press the end of the audio board flex cable to the connector on the logic board.

  7. Route the audio board flex cable along the battery tray as shown.

  8. Press the audio flex cable with the black stick to adhere it to the top of the battery tray.

  9. Press the ends of the right speaker and left speaker flex cables to the connectors.

  10. Route the right speaker flex cable between the top case and battery foam as shown.

  11. Use the flat end of the black stick to route the left speaker flex cable between the top case and battery foam as shown.

Reinstall the following part to complete reassembly:
