Import into iMovie on iPhone using AirDrop
You can use AirDrop to transfer an iMovie project or project media to an iPhone or iPad from another iPhone or iPad. For example, you might start a project on an iPhone but want to finish editing on an iPad.
AirDrop works with iOS and iPadOS devices that have a Lightning connector. AirDrop transfers information using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology. You must be on the same Wi-Fi network, or within approximately 30 feet (10 meters) of the other device. Transfers are encrypted for security.
Import an iMovie project from another device
Open iMovie on the device you want to transfer from, then do one of the following:
From the Projects browser: Tap the project you want to transfer.
If you’re editing a project: Tap Done.
Tap the Share button , tap Export Project, tap AirDrop, then tap the device you want to transfer to.
Important: To share the project file (rather than a video file that you can play but not edit), make sure to tap Export Project before you tap AirDrop.
If the other device doesn’t appear automatically, make sure AirDrop is turned on on both devices in Control Center.
On the device you want to transfer to, tap Accept when an AirDrop alert appears.
After you import a project, you must copy its media to the photo library to make that media available in the iMovie media browser for use in other projects. See Record video and take photos in iMovie on iPhone.
Import video or photos from another device
In iMovie or the Photos app on the device you want to transfer from, tap the video clip, photo, or movie you want to transfer.
Tap the Share button , then tap the device you want to transfer to.
If the other device doesn’t appear automatically, make sure AirDrop is turned on on both devices in Control Center.
On the device you want to transfer to, tap Accept when an AirDrop alert appears.
Imported media is added to the photo library. Follow the instructions in Add video clips and photos in iMovie on iPhone to add that media to your movie or trailer project in iMovie.
