Learn about AppleCare One Family and Family Sharing
Before you start an AppleCare One Family plan for your Family Sharing group, learn more about how the Family plan works with Family Sharing.
Any adult member of a Family Sharing group can start a Family plan for their family members.
If Purchase Sharing is turned on, the family organizer pays for AppleCare One Family, regardless of which adult family member subscribes to the plan. The plan subscriber can also choose to use their own payment method to pay for Family.
If a Family plan is active for your Family Sharing group, family members can’t purchase a different AppleCare plan while staying in the Family Sharing group.
If the Family plan's subscriber leaves or is removed from the Family Sharing group, coverage will end for the device owners in the group.
Start AppleCare One for your Family Sharing group
If you set up Family Sharing, AppleCare One Family can cover eligible devices for all family members.
Before purchasing a Family plan, you can also check which devices in your family will be ready to add immediately, and which might require diagnostics or service prior to being eligible for the plan.
Sign in to your Apple Account and use a device that meets the following requirements:
iPhone with iOS 18.5 or later
iPad with iPadOS 18.5 or later
Mac with macOS 15.5 or later
Apple Vision Pro with visionOS 2.5 or later
Open Settings, then General, then AppleCare & Warranty on your device
Select an eligible device in your Family Sharing group, such as a newly purchased device or a device with current AppleCare coverage (or with coverage that ended within 45 days).
In the AppleCare One Plans section, select AppleCare One Family.
To check for eligible devices owned by family members, tap or click the “eligible devices" link, and a new screen will appear.
If a device appears under Ready to Add, it will be automatically added to the plan.
If a device appears under Action Needed, the device owner will need to complete a device check to check eligibility for coverage before being added to the plan.
If you don't see one of the devices owned by a member of your Family Sharing group, consider the following factors:
If the device should be eligible, a member of the Family Sharing group might need to sign in to their Apple Account on that device or pair it with one of their other Apple devices associated with their Apple Account first (for example, AirPods).
If you don't see a family member's display, connect it to a family member's Mac to check eligibility.
Some devices will not be eligible to add to the plan, and these will not be visible before subscribing to a Family plan.
To subscribe to AppleCare One Family for your Family Sharing group, close the screen with eligible devices and follow the onscreen steps to complete your purchase.
You can verify that your devices are covered by AppleCare One Family by checking coverage online, or use a device associated with your Apple Account and open AppleCare & Warranty in the Settings app.
Understand AppleCare One Family eligibility
Device eligibility for AppleCare One coverage depends on several factors, including, but not limited to, the following:
The age of the device
The device failed a device check
Attempting to add a seventh Apple Vision Pro to the AppleCare One Family plan2
The country or region of device purchase
Active service in progress for the device
Device is marked as lost and Lost Mode is turned on
Coverage by another AppleCare product3
Device is not associated with an Apple Account in the Family Sharing group4
Add devices to AppleCare One Family
After an adult family member starts AppleCare One Family, and when someone new joins your Family Sharing group, all eligible devices will automatically be added to the plan, and other devices might require further action by the family member who owns the device. To cover an eligible display, connect it to a Mac and add it in System Settings.
If the device is Ready to Add
Devices owned by members of your Family Sharing group will be automatically added to the plan if eligible. These devices include, but are not limited to, the following:
Devices currently covered by AppleCare+, AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, or AppleCare One Individual.5
Devices owned by family members that were purchased less than 60 days before subscribing to a Family plan, or newly purchased Apple devices.
If the device requires a device check
If further action is required by the device owner, they might need to confirm that the device is in good condition before it can be added. These steps can include a remote device check, taking photos of their device, or visiting an Apple Store for further inspection.
Learn how to complete a device check
If the device check is successful, it will automatically be added to the plan. If further inspection is needed, they can schedule an appointment at an Apple Store to help determine if the device can be added to the plan.
If the device is not in good condition, it might be eligible to add to your plan after an Apple-certified repair.
If the device is not eligible to add
If a device is unable to be added to the AppleCare One Family plan, the device owner can review the message on their device for more information.

AppleCare One Family is only available in the United States. AppleCare One plans are not for business or commercial use. To get AppleCare One Family, the subscriber must have a United States Apple Account that is not managed by a business.
Up to six Apple Vision Pro devices can be covered on an AppleCare One Family plan. You can swap covered devices or purchase an AppleCare+ plan for additional Apple Vision Pro devices.
If your device is covered by an iPhone Upgrade Program (iUP) plan, you’ll need to call Apple Support to cancel your AppleCare+ plan before your device will be able to be added to AppleCare One.
If a family member signs out of their device, and an Apple Account that is not a part of the Family Sharing group signs in, the device will be removed from AppleCare One Family.
If a device has AppleCare+ or AppleCare One Individual coverage, those plans will be canceled, and a refund will be provided to the device owner based on the percentage of unexpired AppleCare plan coverage for the device. If the original plan was paid upfront in full, this will be sent as an Apple Gift Card.
Devices that lose AppleCare coverage will be eligible for new coverage within 45 days after the previous AppleCare coverage ends. After 45 days, some devices might require further action or be ineligible for new coverage. If a Family plan is active for your Family Sharing group, family members can’t purchase a different AppleCare plan while staying in the Family Sharing group.
