Configure Xsan SAN clients in macOS Server
You configure clients to use the SAN by giving them a configuration profile that’s generated by and specific to the SAN.
Adding the configuration profile adds the computer to the SAN as a client. Removing the configuration profile removes the client from the SAN.
Configuration profiles are administered in the Profiles pane of System Preferences. You can distribute profiles to clients either manually, or through macOS Server’s Profile Manager.
These instructions assume you already have a fully configured SAN. If not, see First-time Xsan SAN setup in macOS Server.
Distribute profiles manually
In the Server app
sidebar, select Xsan from the list of advanced services.Choose Save Configuration Profile.
Save the resulting file to your computer.
Distribute the configuration profile to the clients. You can:
Use file sharing to put the configuration profile on the client
Use a USB flash drive to copy the profile to the client
Email the profile to a user on the client computer
Use AirDrop to copy the profile to the client
Install the profile by double-clicking it or using the Profiles pane of System Preferences.
Distribute profiles using Profile Manager
Before beginning this task, you must learn about, enable, and configure Profile Manager for Device Management. See Intro to Profile Manager.
The instructions necessary to complete the following steps are available in the Profile Manager help topics.
In Profile Manager, create a Device Group for the SAN clients.
Enroll at least one of the Xsan controllers in Device Management of Profile Manager.
This enrollment is required even if Profile Manager is running on one of the Xsan metadata controllers. All controllers must be enrolled in Device Management of the same Profile Manager.
Enroll each SAN client into Device Management of Profile Manager, and add them to the SAN client Device Group.
Apple recommends all SAN clients be in the same Device Group, and that the group be the only Device Group which contains the Xsan payload for this SAN. This centralizes SAN membership control within Profile Manager, and reduces future confusion and future administrative overhead.
Edit the default configuration profile for the Device Group to include the Xsan payload.
In the Xsan payload, click the pop-up menu, then select the desired SAN, then save the configuration profile.
Use Profile Manager to push the Xsan configuration profile to the Clients.
