Create an Apple ID on Mac

An Apple ID gives you access to the iTunes Store, the App Store, Apple Books, iCloud, FaceTime, and other Apple services. It consists of an email address (for example, michael_cavanna@icloud.com) and a password. Apple recommends you use the same Apple ID for all Apple services. For more information about Apple ID, see Frequently Asked Questions.

You can create an Apple ID using your current email address or have an @icloud email address generated for you.

You can create an Apple ID on a Mac, an iOS or iPadOS device, or at the Apple ID account website. See the Apple Support article Sign in with your Apple ID.

Using either your current email address or an iCloud address generated for you, create an Apple ID:

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Sign In.

  2. Click Create Apple ID, then follow the onscreen instructions.

Apple ID dialog ready for entry of an Apple ID name. A Create Apple ID link appears which allows you to create a new Apple ID.

Note: In several countries and regions, you can use a phone number instead of an email address as your Apple ID. See the Apple Support article Use your mobile phone number as your Apple ID.

For information about setting up your Apple ID preferences on your Mac, see Set up your Apple ID preferences.

To keep your purchases and access to Apple services secure, don’t share your Apple ID and password with others. To share your purchases with family members, you can set up a Family Sharing group with up to six members of your family. See Set up Family Sharing.

For information about using your Apple ID on an iOS or iPadOS device, see “Manage Apple ID and iCloud settings” in the user guide for iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
