Browse the web on your Mac
Safari is the browser built in to your Mac. It’s fast, private by default, and works with your iPhone and iPad so your tabs, bookmarks, and passwords stay in sync. To open Safari, click its icon in the Dock. To access your bookmarks, Reading List, and Tab Groups, click the Sidebar button in the toolbar.

Search and navigate
The bar at the top of the Safari window is called the Smart Search field. To search the web or go to a website, click the Smart Search field, type a search term or web address, then press Return. Safari shows suggestions as you type.
Open a new window Press Command-N to open a new Safari window. | Open a Private Browsing window Press Shift-Command-N. Safari won’t save your history, cookies, or autofill information for the session. |
Go back or forward Click the back or forward buttons in the toolbar, or swipe left or right with two fingers on your trackpad. | Zoom in or out Press Command-Plus (+) to zoom in, Command-Minus (–) to zoom out, and Command-0 to restore the default size. |
Tabs and bookmarks
Tab Groups let you save and name a collection of related tabs — useful for keeping a research project, a shopping search, or a set of work pages separate from everything else. To create one, open the Safari sidebar, click the Tab Groups button, then choose New Empty Tab Group or New Tab Group with [x] Tabs. Learn more about Tab Groups.
To pin a tab so it stays open and out of the way, right-click the tab and choose Pin Tab. Pinned tabs shrink down to just the site’s icon on the left side of the tab bar and reopen automatically the next time you launch Safari.
Open a new tab Press Command-T. To close a tab, press Command-W. | Open a link in a new tab Command-click any link to open it in a new tab without leaving your current page. |
Reopen a recently closed tab Press Shift-Command-T to reopen the last tab you closed. Press it again to step back through recently closed tabs. | Navigate between tabs Click any tab, or press Command-Shift-] to move right and Command-Shift-[ to move left. |
Bookmark a page Press Command-D, or click the Share button in the toolbar and choose Add Bookmark. Find your bookmarks in the Safari sidebar. | Save to Reading List Shift-click the Smart Search field, or click the Share button and choose Add to Reading List. Access your list anytime from the Safari sidebar, even offline. |
Read and find
Find text on a page Press Command-F, type what you’re looking for, and Safari highlights every match. Press Return to step through them. | Use Reader view Click the Reader button in the Smart Search field, or press Shift-Command-R. Reader strips away ads, sidebars, and navigation to show just the text. Click it again to return to the normal view. | View your history Press Command-Y or choose History from the menu bar to see every page you’ve visited. You can search your history or clear it from there too. |
