Change General settings in GarageBand on Mac
Use General settings to change how performances are captured, enable Force Touch gestures, reset warnings, and more.
To change these settings, choose GarageBand > Settings or press Command-Comma, then click General.
Cycle Off: Choose the outcome when a software instrument records over an existing MIDI region on the same track when Cycle mode is turned off.
Replace: The new MIDI events record over the existing MIDI region (and its content), deleting and replacing it, from the playhead position where you start recording to the playhead position where you stop recording.
Merge: The new MIDI events are combined with the existing MIDI region, from the playhead position where you start recording to the playhead position where you stop recording.
Cycle On: Choose the outcome when a software instrument records over an existing MIDI region on the same track when Cycle mode is turned on. See Use the cycle area.
Create Takes: Each repetition of the cycle recording creates a new take region enclosed in a take folder. The existing MIDI region is not deleted, but layered with the new take regions. See Record takes.
Merge: The new MIDI events of each recording cycle are combined with the existing MIDI region.
Tip: Use the Merge option with Cycle mode on to record drum tracks, one drum kit piece per cycle.
Enable Force Touch trackpad: Enable additional functions in GarageBand using Force Touch trackpad gestures. See Force Touch trackpad gestures in GarageBand on Mac.
Note: This checkbox is visible only if you have a Force Touch trackpad connected.
Open plug-ins in Controls view by default: Open plug-in windows in Controls view, making plug-in parameters available for use with VoiceOver.
Reset Warnings: Reset all warnings and alerts that were previously set to “Do not show again.”
