Change the color profile of an image in Pixelmator Pro on Mac
Color profiles define how colors are displayed in an image. You can change the color profile (or color space) of an image to any RGB profile installed on your Mac.
Adobe RGB represents a wide range of colors and can render softer and subtler tones than sRGB, a color profile designed for displaying content on digital screens and the web. When you assign a new color profile to an image, you’re changing how the colors are interpreted and displayed, not changing the color values in your image.
Note: To use a custom color profile (rather than one of the pre-installed profiles in Pixelmator Pro), you must place the color profile in the ColorSync profiles folder (/Library/ColorSync/Profiles) on your Mac, then follow the steps in the task below.
Assign a different color profile to an image
In Pixelmator Pro on Mac, open an image.
Do one of the following:
Click
in the toolbar, then choose Color Profile.
Choose Image > Color Profile.
Select Advanced, click the pop-up menu, then choose a new color profile.
Under Method, select Assign Profile.
Note: If you don’t see the Method options, click Show Details.
Click OK.
To restore the image’s original look, repeat the steps above to reassign the original color profile.
Match an image to a new color profile
If you want to ensure that your image retains as much of its original look as possible when you change its color profile, use the Match to Profile option. When you change a color profile using this option, Pixelmator Pro modifies the color values in your image to render them as closely as possible to the original profile while conforming to the new profile. Depending on the color profile you’re matching to, the changes to your image might be very subtle or more noticeable.
CAUTION: When you change an image’s profile using Match to Profile, the changes to the color values are permanent. You can’t revert back to the original colors by reassigning the original color profile.
In Pixelmator Pro on Mac, open an image.
Do one of the following:
Click
in the toolbar, then choose Color Profile.
Choose Image > Color Profile.
Select Advanced, click the pop-up menu, then choose a new color profile.
Under Method, select Match to Profile.
Note: If you don’t see the Method options, click Show Details.
Click OK.
See what an image looks like in another color profile
Sometimes images look different when printed or displayed on other devices than they do on your screen. To preview how an image might appear on a different display or when printed, you can choose a soft proofing profile that matches the output device or format. Soft proofing changes the colors on your screen to simulate how the image will look on the target device or when printed.
In Pixelmator Pro on Mac, open an image.
Choose View > Soft Proof Colors > Enable Soft Proof Colors.
A checkmark appears next to the menu item.
Choose View > Soft Proof Colors, then choose a color profile from the list.
Note: You must have a color profile installed to soft proof with it. To install a profile in macOS, place it in the ColorSync profiles folder (/Library/ColorSync/Profiles).
