Change Notifications preferences on Mac
On your Mac, use Notifications System Preferences to specify when you don’t want to be disturbed by notifications, and to control how apps show notifications in Notification Centre.
To change these preferences, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Notifications. Select Do Not Disturb or an app on the left, then view or change settings on the right.

Do Not Disturb | Stop notifications during the time period you specify, when the display is in sleep, when the screen is locked, or when you mirror the screen (for example, while playing a presentation). To receive call notifications even when Do Not Disturb is on, select the call tickboxes. When Do Not Disturb is on, the Do Not Disturb icon is shown in the menu bar. See Use Do Not Disturb. |
Allow Notifications from | Turn notifications on or off for the selected app. When you turn notifications off, the app’s alert style and other notification options are dimmed. |
Alert style | Select a style for the app’s notifications:

Show notifications on lock screen | When you wake your Mac from sleep, app notifications you received while it was sleeping are shown in the login window. |
Show in Notification Centre | List the app’s recent notifications in Notification Centre. Notifications older than 7 days aren’t shown. |
Badge app icon | Let the app show the number of notifications on its icon in the Dock. For example, Calendar shows a badge on its icon when you receive invitations. |
Play sound for notifications | Let the app play notification sounds. |
Show previews | Show a preview in notifications for the app. For example, if you receive an email, you see a preview of the email in the Mail notification.
Note: If you choose a setting from the “Show previews” pop-up menu at the bottom of the preference pane, it’s applied to all apps. |
Notification grouping | Choose whether and how the app’s notifications are grouped in Notification Centre:
