Get timely information at a glance with widgets.

How to add widgets on your iPad

  1. Swipe all the way to the right on your Home Screen to show Today View.
  2. Touch and hold an empty area in Today View, then tap the Add button  when it appears in the top left-hand corner.
  3. Select a widget, swipe left or right to choose a widget size, then tap Add Widget.
  4. Tap Done in the top right-hand corner, or just tap your Home Screen.

After you've added widgets, you can swipe to the right to see your widgets in Today View, and then swipe left to hide them. Or you can choose to keep Today View visible on the first page of your Home Screen. To do so, touch and hold an empty area in the Today View until you see Keep On Home Screen, then turn it on.

Use widgets from other apps

Some third-party apps also provide widgets that you can add. Widgets that have been updated for iPadOS 14 will work the same as built-in iPad widgets.

Until your favourite apps have been updated for iPadOS 14, their widgets will behave differently. Here's how to use widgets that haven't been updated:

  1. Touch and hold an empty area in Today View until the widgets jiggle.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of Today View, then tap Customise.
  3. Tap the Add button  next to each app widget that you want to add.
  4. Tap Done. These widgets will appear at the bottom of Today View.

How to pin your favourite widgets

  1. Touch and hold an empty area in Today View until the widgets jiggle.
  2. Scroll down to see the widgets that you've added.
  3. Drag the widgets that you want to pin into the dark area at the top of Today View.
  4. Tap Done in the top right-hand corner, or just tap your Home Screen.

Widgets that you pin will always be visible in Today View. Swipe up on Today View to see the rest of your widgets.

Edit your widgets

You can customise the content of some widgets. For example, you can choose which list the Reminders widget shows. Here’s how:

  1. Touch and hold a widget to open the quick actions menu.
  2. Tap Edit Widget .
  3. Make your changes, then tap outside the widget.

You can also rearrange your widgets. Just touch and hold a widget until it jiggles, then move the widget up or down.

To delete a widget, touch and hold it, then tap Remove Widget. Tap Remove to confirm.

You will need iPadOS 14 to be able to edit your widgets. If you can't see the option to edit a specific widget, this means that it's not available for that widget.

Use widget stacks

With iPadOS 14, you can use widget stacks to save space in Today View. You can use Smart Stacks or create your own widget stacks.

Smart Stacks combine several widgets into one. You can scroll through the widgets in a Smart Stack or you can let iPadOS show you relevant widgets automatically. For example, you may see Calendar showing your upcoming events during the day, and Maps showing your commute time in the evening.

Create a Smart Stack

A Smart Stack is a pre-built collection of widgets that displays the right widget based on factors such as your location, an activity or the time. A Smart Stack rotates widgets automatically to show you the most relevant information throughout the day.

If you don't have any active Smart Stacks, iPadOS will show you a suggested Smart Stack when you add a widget. Here's how you can create your own:

  1. Touch and hold an empty area in Today View until the apps jiggle.
  2. Tap the Add button grey plus icon in the top left-hand corner.
  3. Scroll down and tap Smart Stack.
  4. Tap Add Widget.

Create your own widget stacks

  1. Touch and hold an empty area in Today View until the apps jiggle.
  2. Drag a widget on top of another widget. You can stack up to 10 widgets.
  3. Tap Done.

Edit a widget stack

  1. Touch and hold the widget stack.
  2. Tap Edit Stack. From here, you can reorder the widgets in the stack by dragging the grid icon three grey lines. You can also turn on Smart Rotate if you want iPadOS to show you relevant widgets throughout the day. Or swipe left over a widget to delete it.
  3. Tap grey x icon for remove when you've finished.

You need iPadOS 14 to use Smart Stacks or create your own widget stacks.
