Set up a card in Wallet to ride transit with Apple Pay

Choose a card to pay for rides with Apple Pay. And learn how to enable Express Transit mode.

First things first

Here's what you need to set up a card in Wallet to ride transit with Apple Pay:1

To enable and use Express Transit mode, you need an iPhone SE, iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus or later.3

If you use your transit agency's app

When you download your transit agency's app, you might be able to use it for additional services, like the following:

  • Set up a new transit card
  • Transfer the balance of your virtual card
  • Add funds to your transit card5

Set up a card in Wallet for Express Transit mode

You can set up an eligible card in Wallet to use for Express Transit mode.6 Just follow these steps to set up an eligible payment card or transit card in Wallet:

Set up a new payment card

To set up a credit, debit, or prepaid card for Express Transit mode with Apple Pay, follow these steps:

For iPhone

  1. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone and tap The Add button.
  2. Follow the steps to add a new card.
  3. Tap Next.
  4. Enable Express Transit mode for your new card.

For Apple Watch

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone and tap the My Watch tab.
  2. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay, then tap Add Card.
  3. Follow the steps to add a new card, then tap Next.
  4. Enable Express Transit mode for your new card.

Set up a new transit card in Wallet

You can set up a new transit card to use for Express Transit mode with Apple Pay in Wallet:7

  1. Check that the Region on your device is correct.
    • On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Language & Region, then scroll down to Region.
    • For your Apple Watch, open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap the My Watch tab. Then tap General > Language & Region and check your Region.
  2. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
  3. Tap The Add button, then tap Continue.
  4. Tap your city's transit card, then choose an amount to put on the card and tap Add.8
  5. Follow the steps to create a new transit card on your iPhone.
  6. Enable Express Transit mode for your new transit card.

The first transit card that you add to Wallet automatically becomes your Express Transit card. You can change your Express Transit card in Wallet at any time.

Transfer the balance of your physical transit card to Wallet

First, make sure the Region on your device is correct:

  • For iPhone, go to Settings > General > Language & Region, then scroll down to Region.
  • For Apple Watch, open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap the My Watch tab. Then tap General > Language & Region and check your Region.

When your Region is set, follow these steps:7

For iPhone

  1. Open the Wallet app and tap The Add button, then tap Continue.
  2. Tap the name of the transit card you want to add.8
  3. Tap Transfer Balance from Existing Card.
  4. Enter the 4 digits of your card number that you're asked to enter.
  5. Rest the top of your iPhone on the middle of the transit card until you see "Card Added" on the screen. This process could take a few minutes to complete.

 

For Apple Watch

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
  3. Tap Add Card, then tap Continue.
  4. Tap the name of the transit card you want to add.8
  5. Tap Transfer Balance from Existing Card.
  6. Follow the steps to transfer the balance.

Enable Express Transit mode

When you turn on Express Transit mode for a card, you can quickly pay for rides without using Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. Here's how to enable Express Transit mode for a payment card or transit card:

For iPhone

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay, then tap Express Transit Card.
  3. Select a card, then authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.

For Apple Watch

  1. Open the Watch App app on your iPhone and select the My Watch tab.
  2. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay, then tap Express Transit Card.
  3. Select a card, then authenticate with your Apple Watch passcode.

Move a transit card from your iPhone to your Apple Watch

Here's how you can move a transit card from your iPhone to your Apple Watch:

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap the My Watch tab. If you have multiple watches, choose one.
  2. Scroll down and tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
  3. Scroll down to the transit card that you want to move to your Apple Watch.
  4. Then, tap the Add button next to the card.

You can use the Watch app to move your transit card back to your iPhone.10

Unlike credit and debit cards in Wallet, transit cards can exist on only one device at a time.

  1. Apple Pay isn't available for children under 13. Age varies by country or region.
  2. If you aren't sure that your location supports transit cards with Apple Pay, contact your transit agency.
  3. In Beijing and Shanghai, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus support Express Transit mode.
  4. If you don't see Add to Apple Wallet, the transit card might not be eligible to add to Wallet.
  5. You might need to contact your transit agency to see if you can add funds to your transit card in their app.
  6. See where you can use Express Transit mode to pay for rides with Apple Pay.
  7. You might need to contact your transit agency to see which of these methods they support. Transit card use might be limited based on regional availability.
  8. If you don't see the transit card you're looking for, it might not be available in your area.
  9. If you sign out of iCloud or turn off Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode on your iPhone or Apple Watch, all credit, debit, and transit cards are removed from that device. When you remove a transit card from any device, the remaining balance will be stored and available to be transferred to the same or another iPhone or Apple Watch that is connected to a network and signed into iCloud with the same Apple ID.
  10. You can't move a transit card during a transit journey.
