Set up a nearby unmanaged class in Classroom
For unmanaged nearby classes created by you, neither Apple School Manager nor a mobile device management (MDM) solution is required. These classes are also incompatible with:
Managed Apple IDs
Shared iPad
The education configuration profile from your MDM solution that creates MDM-synced classes
Features
Unmanaged nearby classes offer the following features:
You can advertise an unmanaged nearby class for enrollment.
Students can browse for that class from their iPad or Mac.
Students can easily move from room to room with their iPad or Mac.
Students add the class by entering a four-digit invite code provided by you. A student can add more than one class—by the same or different teachers.

Enter your information and create your first class
Open the Classroom app on your Mac, then enter the name you want your students to see (for example, Mrs. Dawson).
Click the image icon to take or choose a photo, then click Done.
To change it later, click on your icon in the upper-left corner and change your name or photo.
Click Continue.
Click Create Class, then enter the name for your class and an optional description, select an icon and background color for that class, then click Create.
Invite students to join your class
Your unmanaged nearby advertised class is ready for enrollment, and a student can browse for that class by choosing Settings > Classroom on their iPad. Students add the class by entering a four-digit invitation code provided by you. A student can join more than one class—by the same or different teachers—making it easy for students to move from room to room with their iPad.
If you’re not already in the class, select the class, click the Actions button , then click Invite.
Note: It may take up to 10 seconds for the class to appear for nearby students.
Tell the students to do one of the following:
On their iPad, choose Settings > Classroom, and tap “Add Class name.”
On their Mac, choose System Preferences > Classroom, and click “Add Class name.”
If your students have a Me Card in the Contacts app, they can use or change their name and photo.
When you’re ready for students to join, display the class invitation code on the Apple TV for all students to see.
After a student adds the class, that student appears in the window. A checkbox appears next to the students’ names, indicating they’re going to be part of this class.
Review the list of students and deselect the ones you don’t want in the class, then click Add.
You can add more students at any time.
Remove students from your class
If you’re not already in the class, select the class.
Do one of the following:
Select All Students in the sidebar.
Select a specific group in the sidebar.
Manually create a group, then select it in the sidebar.
Click Select in the upper-right corner of the screen, select specific students, then click Done.
Click the Actions button , click Remove, then click Remove again.
