Convert an image to monochrome in Pixelmator Pro on iPad
You can convert color images to monochrome to create black-and-white and sepia-toned treatments, as well as contemporary color-tinted effects. These monochrome conversions give you more control over the result than simple desaturation.
Convert an image to black and white
The Black & White control automatically converts your image to black and white. Optional controls let you adjust the color mix similarly to how colored filters are used in a traditional black-and-white darkroom. These controls affect the appearance of areas of an image that were originally a certain color. For example, increasing the Blue value lightens tones that were blue in the original image (such as the sky).
In Pixelmator Pro on iPad, select a layer in the Layers sidebar.
Select
in the Tools sidebar, then turn on Black & White in the Color Adjustments pane.
Drag the Red, Green, and Blue sliders to increase or decrease each channel’s contribution to the image.
Drag the Tone slider to the right to increase the brightness in areas of saturated color from the original image.
Drag the Intensity slider to control the strength of the black-and-white effect.
At 100% the image is fully black and white.
Tip: Keep the total percentage of the red, green, and blue channels at or below 100% to prevent blowing out the highlights in an image.
Convert an image to color monochrome
Use Color Monochrome to create monochromatic images from a single color source for artistic effect. You can start from a color image, but converting the image to black and white first allows you to create a monochromatic image with either a subtle color tint or a dramatic color wash, or any amount of toning in between.
In Pixelmator Pro on iPad, select a layer in the Layers sidebar.
Select
in the Tools sidebar, then turn on Color Monochrome in the Color Adjustments pane.
Do one of the following:
Tap the color well, then select a color.
Tap
then select a color in the canvas.
Drag the Intensity slider to adjust the strength of the Color Monochrome adjustment.
0% is fully desaturated, and 100% is fully saturated.
Sepia tint an image
Use Sepia to create sepia-toned images with the warm, nostalgic look of vintage photography. This adjustment applies a brown tint that resembles early 20th century photographs. For results most typical of classical sepia-toned images, apply this adjustment after a black-and-white conversion. However, applying Sepia to a color image can yield interesting results that resemble early hand-tinted color photographs.
In Pixelmator Pro on iPad, select a layer in the Layers sidebar.
Swipe down from the top of the screen to reveal the menu bar, then choose Format > Color Adjustments > Sepia.
Go to Sepia in the Color Adjustments pane, then drag the Intensity slider to adjust the strength of the Sepia effect.
