Removal
Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.
Place the open iPhone in the inner display fixture with the inner display side faceup.
Use a black stick to remove the trim from around the inner display.
Use a black stick to unhook the clips at the hinge.
Remove the outer display.
Lift the inner display flex cable off the connector.
Gently insert the iPhone into the heated inner display pocket with the back glass faceup and the USB-C connector facing the bottom of the pocket. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.
Use the heated display removal fixture to heat the inner display adhesive.
Remove the tray with the iPhone in it from the heated display fixture and put the iPhone in the inner display fixture with the inner display facing up.
Starting at the top right corner, insert a cutting tool between the inner display and the enclosure. Cut around the edges. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.
Caution: Inserting the tool too deep can damage the flex cables and the hinge.
Stop at the hinge and lift the inner display slightly. Continue cutting to release the adhesive at the hinge. Put the FaceTime camera protective film on the FaceTime camera.
Note: The FaceTime camera protective film comes with a replacement inner display.
Continue lifting the inner display while cutting horizontally as shown.
Continue cutting around the edges, stopping at the corners.
Move the inner display flex cable to be visible on the inner display side to avoid damaging the cable.
Carefully peel the inner display off the enclosure.
Reassembly
Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove all adhesive and polyester film from the enclosure.
For the larger black polyester film strips located in the middle of each side, start peeling at one corner. If that corner starts to pull apart, go to another corner. These polyester film strips need to come off in one piece.
Image shows one glue pocket. There are 21 glue pockets around the perimeter of the enclosure.
Use ESD-safe tweezers to clean the glue pockets and any residual adhesive.
Install new grounding foams.
Install the new adhesives into the enclosure.
The grounding foam (1) shape will match the corner where it should be applied.
Check the pattern on the hinge cover to determine which shim (2) should go on which side.
Leave the blue liner on the inner display foam.
Align the replacement inner display adhesive over the enclosure.
- Caution: Ensure that you’ve removed all residual adhesive from the enclosure before you apply the replacement display adhesive.
Use the flat end of the black stick to adhere the inner display adhesive to the enclosure. Move the black stick around the edge of the enclosure at least three times to ensure that the adhesive is adhered evenly.
Run your finger across the polyester film in the middle to adhere the inner display adhesive to the enclosure.
Peel the top liner off the adhesive.
Fill the syringe with glue.
Remove the protective film from the FaceTime camera.
Peel all liners off of the replacement inner display.
Apply glue to the space between the inner display adhesive and the display foam seal.
Position the replacement inner display in the inner display alignment tray.
Place the iPhone with the inner display side facedown on top of the replacement inner display that's in the fixture.
Press the end of the inner display flex cable to the connector.
Remove the iPhone from the inner display alignment tray. Then insert the iPhone in the inner display fixture.
Use the syringe to insert glue into the glue pockets. Then press the glue into place.
Align the inner display trim with the glue pockets. Attach the clips at the hinge area as shown.
Press the trim to the enclosure, beginning at the corners and moving around to the edges.
Press along the middle of the inner display, moving upward toward the top edge.
Let the inner display set for 1 hour.
Install the display without the replacement adhesive in the enclosure.
Position the inner display press plate on the inner display.
Position the inner display fixture in the display press.
Pull down the lever until the display press locks.
Wait until the display press beeps and its timer shows 0. Pull down the lever and pull out the release knob. Then lift the lever.
Remove the inner display fixture from the display press.
