  • If you replace this part, it’s recommended to run Repair Assistant in order to finish the repair. Repair Assistant will be available on the device after you’ve completed all reassembly steps.

Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

  1. Use a torque driver and the PL1.1 bit to remove two PL1.1 screws, one from each side of the USB-C connector.

  2. Use the heated display removal fixture to heat the outer display adhesive. Refer to the Heated Display Removal Fixture Operating Manual for instructions.

    • Important: Only cut along the bottom of the iPhone while it's in the fixture.

  3. Remove the iPhone from the heated display removal fixture. Place the iPhone in the repair tray with the outer display faceup and the USB-C connector facing the cutout. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Using the adhesive cutter, cut along the left and right sides of the outer display, stopping at the antenna bands.

    • Insert the edge of the adhesive cutter between the outer display and the enclosure. Hold the adhesive cutter at a 45-degree angle or higher and cut along both sides.

      • Caution

        • You must use a new adhesive cutter.

        • Holding the adhesive cutter at less than a 45-degree angle can result in damage.

  4. Slide the outer display toward the bottom of the iPhone until you see a slight gap. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Insert the adhesive cutter at a 45-degree angle into the top of the iPhone and cut along the top until the outer display is free.

    • Insert the repair tray suction cup into the slot in the repair tray.

    • Tilt up the outer display toward the suction cup. Press the top and bottom edges of the outer display to secure it to the suction cup.

    • Caution

      • To avoid damaging the enclosure or outer display, ensure that the internal display clips are released before you tilt up the display.

      • To avoid damaging the outer display flex cables, don’t tilt up the bottom of the display more than 5 degrees.

      • Remove the two screw caps to access two trilobe screws.

  5. Use a torque driver and trilobe bit to remove six trilobe screws from the input/output (I/O) board cowling. Remove the cowling and save it for reassembly. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Lift the ends of the battery flex cable (1) and the outer display flex cable (2) off the connectors.

    • Caution: You must disconnect the battery flex cable first to ensure that the iPhone stays turned off.

  6. Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove one crosshead screw from the ambient light sensor cowling. Remove the cowling and save it for reassembly. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Lift the end of the ambient light sensor flex cable off the connector.

    • Remove the outer display.

    • Place the outer front camera cap on the outer front camera.

Reassembly

  1. Remove the suction cup from the repair tray.

    • Use ESD-safe tweezers to pick up the outer display adhesive. Then pull the adhesive at a 45-degree angle to remove it. Repeat this process until all the adhesive is removed from the perimeter of the enclosure.

    • Caution

      • Don't use the adhesive removal tool.

      • Ensure that the top speaker grille doesn't become covered with adhesive during cleaning.

      • Use an ethanol or IPA wipe to clean any excess adhesive.

    • Important

      • If the internal display clips are damaged, you may need to replace the outer display.

      • If you’re installing a replacement outer display, peel the protective liner off the top and underside of it before continuing.

  2. Align the replacement outer display adhesive over the enclosure. Ensure that the top holes of the adhesive align over the outer front camera assembly.

    • Caution: Ensure that you’ve removed all residual adhesive from the outer display and the enclosure before you apply the replacement outer display adhesive.

  3. The replacement outer display adhesive has a top release liner, a middle release liner, and a bottom release liner. Grasp the tab on the bottom release liner. Then slowly pull the bottom release liner out from under the adhesive while pressing the adhesive onto the enclosure.

  4. Inspect the outer display adhesive. If the adhesive is positioned correctly on the shelf of the enclosure, continue to step 5. If it isn't correctly positioned, repeat reassembly step 1 to remove it. Clean the shelf of the enclosure if necessary. Then repeat reassembly steps 2 through 4 before continuing to the next step.

  5. Use the flat end of the black stick to adhere the display adhesive to the enclosure. Move the black stick around the edge of the enclosure at least three times to ensure that the adhesive is adhered evenly.

  6. Remove the top release liner as shown.

  7. Insert the suction cup into the repair tray. Align the outer display flex cable with the connector on the I/O board. Then gently press along the edges of the outer display to secure it to the suction cup.

  8. Press the end of the ambient light sensor flex cable to the connector.

  9. Position the ambient light sensor cowling by hooking it under the top speaker.

  10. Use the blue torque driver and crosshead bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-16041) (J6) into the ambient light sensor cowling.

  11. Press the ends of the outer display flex cable (1) and the battery flex cable (2) to the connectors.

  12. Position the I/O board cowling, ensuring that the hook is in place.

  13. Use the green torque driver and trilobe bit to install six new trilobe screws into the I/O board cowling.

    • One screw (923-13683) (K1)

    • Five screws (923-16061) (K2–K6)

  14. Install two screw caps.

  15. Inspect the outer display adhesive to ensure that it’s in the correct position and isn’t damaged or wrinkled. If the adhesive is damaged, remove it and apply replacement adhesive.

    • Warning

      • Carefully inspect the outer display and the magnets on the side of the enclosure for loose or extra screws and other small parts that may have attached to magnetized areas. These small parts can damage the iPhone and cause safety or functional issues when the iPhone is reassembled.

      • If the battery is dented, punctured, or otherwise damaged, stop the repair. You can find a service option at support.apple.com/repair.

  16. Pull the tab on the suction cup to release it from the outer display. Remove the suction cup from the repair tray. Tilt down the outer display to rest on the enclosure.

  17. Remove the liners in any order.

  18. Close the outer display by inserting the top edge into the enclosure first. Then slowly tilt the outer display downward until you feel a connection.

  19. Press all four corners of the outer display simultaneously. Then press along the edges of the outer display until it clicks and the outer display is flush with the enclosure.

  20. Open the iPhone and place it in the open repair tray as shown. Place the corner press plate on the iPhone in the repair tray.

  21. Position the repair tray in the display press.

  22. Pull down the lever until the display press locks.

  23. Wait until the display press beeps and its timer shows 0. Pull down the lever and pull out the release knob. Lift the lever. Remove the repair tray from the display press. Then remove the press plate.

  24. Place the side press plate on the iPhone in the repair tray. Repeat steps 21 through 23. Then continue to step 25.

  25. Remove the iPhone from the open repair tray and place it in the 5.4-inch repair tray.

  26. Use the gray torque driver and PL1.1 bit to install two new PL1.1 screws, one on each side of the USB-C connector. As you install the screws, press lightly on the outer display near the USB-C connector.

    • Note: Use the correct screw color for the model.

      • Star White (923-16064)

      • Night Sky (923-16066)

      • Caution: If the screws aren’t flush, remove them. Then repeat this step to install a new set of PL1.1 screws. If the new screws still aren’t flush, repeat all removal and reassembly steps.
