Removal

Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

Important

Complete back glass removal steps 1 through 5. Then continue to step 1.

  1. Use a torque driver and trilobe bit to five seven trilobe screws, two from the battery connector cowling, two from the FaceTime camera cowling, and three from the logic board upper cowling. Remove the cowlings and save them for reassembly. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Lift the ends of the battery flex cable (1), back glass flex cable (2), and FaceTime camera flex cable (3) off the connectors.

    • Hold the back glass by the edges. Pull the tab on the suction cup to release it from the back glass.

  2. Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove 9 crosshead screws, four from the camera spacer, two from the upper antenna 1, one from the logic board upper cowling, one from the ambient light sensor cowling, and one from the camera. Remove the cowlings and save them for reuse. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Lift the end of the upper antenna 4 flex cable off the connector and move it away from the camera spacer. Remove the spacer and save it for reassembly.

    • Lift the ends of the Wi-Fi flex cable, two camera flex cables, and the FaceTime camera flex cable off the connectors.

    • Remove the FaceTime camera.

  3. Use a torque driver and super screw bit to remove two super screws from the camera and three super screws from the logic board.

  4. Lift the ends of the eight flex cables still connected to the logic board off the connectors.

  5. Use a torque driver and crosshead bit to remove five screws, two screws from the upper antenna 2, two screws from the volume button bracket, and one screw from the microphone cowling. Remove the microphone cowling and save it for reassembly.

  6. Peel the volume button flex cable off the enclosure. Then remove the volume button flex cable and bracket.

  7. Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove two roll bars from the volume button clips. Save them for reassembly.

    • Important: Note the orientation of the roll bars for reassembly.

  8. Use a black stick to push the volume button clips upward to disengage them from the volume button.

  9. Push the volume buttons through the enclosure and remove them.

Reassembly

  1. Install the volume buttons in the enclosure.

  2. New volume buttons come with shims that need to be installed. Remove the adhesive liners from the shims and place them in the round grooves in the clips. Press each for 3 seconds to activate the adhesive.

  3. Install the roll bars into the button trim. Ensure that the roll bars are oriented upward, or the buttons may not work properly.

  4. Lower the clip onto the button trim.

  5. Leave the liners on the replacement volume button flex cable. Then position the replacement volume button flex cable in the enclosure.

  6. Use the gray torque driver and crosshead bit to partially install three crosshead screws (923-16029) (H1–H3) into the flex cable bracket.

  7. Position the microphone cowling in the enclosure.

  8. Press the buttons to ensure that they click as expected. If the buttons don't click as expected, repeat steps 3 through 7.
