Important

Complete outer display removal steps 1 through 4. Then continue to step 1.

  1. Use a torque driver and the trilobe bit to remove eight trilobe screws, six from the battery connector cowling and two from the input/output (I/O) board. Remove the cowling and save it for reassembly.

    • Lift the ends of the battery flex cable (1) and outer display flex cable (2) off the connectors.

    • Caution: You must disconnect the battery flex cable first to ensure that the iPhone stays turned off.

  2. Use a torque driver and the crosshead bit to remove three crosshead screws, one from the outer display sensor cowling and two from the USB-C connector. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Remove the cowling and save it for reassembly.

    • Lift the end of the ambient light sensor flex cable off the connector.

    • Hold the outer display by the edges. Pull the tab on the suction cup to release it from the display. Then set the outer display facedown on a clean, flat surface.

    • Place the outer front camera cap on the outer front camera.

  3. Use a torque driver and the super screw bit to remove five super screws from the I/O board. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

    • Lift the ends of the four remaining flex cables off the connectors on the I/O board as shown.

    • Tilt up the I/O board to remove it from the enclosure. Use the black stick if necessary.

  4. Place the battery protective cover on the battery.

  5. Use a torque driver and the 3IP bit to remove two 3IP screws from the USB-C connector.

    • Caution: Keep the torque driver at a low angle and avoid touching the battery.

    • Use the adhesive cutter to release the adhesive on the USB-C connector as shown.

    • Remove the USB-C connector from the enclosure.

      • Note: If the adhesive doesn't release, use the black stick or adhesive cutter to loosen the adhesive.

Reassembly

Screw location diagram

  1. Use ESD-safe tweezers to remove all residual adhesive from the enclosure and the USB-C connector port. Use an ethanol wipe or IPA wipe to clean these areas.

  2. Remove all the adhesive liners from the replacement USB-C connector. Note the areas where adhesive is present.

  3. Position the USB-C connector in the enclosure. Then insert a USB-C charge cable into the port to ensure proper alignment of the USB-C connector.

  4. Firmly press the USB-C connector for 15 seconds to adhere it to the enclosure.

    • Warning: Ensure that the USB-C charge cable isn’t plugged into a power source.

  5. Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to install two new 3IP screws (923-16055) (F5, F6) into the USB-C connector.

    • Remove the USB-C charge cable.
