Before You Begin
Warning
Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.
Tools
Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)
Crosshead 44 mm half-moon bit
ESD-safe tweezers
Nylon probe (black stick)
Super screw 44 mm half-moon bit
Torque driver (teal, 0.75 kgf cm)

Removal
Note: If you’ve already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.
Important
Complete display removal steps 1 through 5. Then continue to step 1.
Use a torque driver and the crosshead bit to remove 14 crosshead screws.
Remove two crosshead screws, one from the battery connector cowling and one from the display connector cowling.
Remove seven crosshead screws from the bottom speaker.
Remove five crosshead screws from the Taptic Engine.
Note: The screw closest to the USB-C connector is on the sidewall of enclosure.
Important: Two screws secure the grounding spring near the Taptic Engine. Note the orientation of the grounding spring before removing it. Remove the grounding spring and save it for reassembly.
Remove the battery connector cowling and the display connector cowling. Save the cowlings for reassembly.
Remove the USB-C flex cable cowling and save it for reassembly.
Lift the end of the battery flex cable off the connector.
Caution: You must disconnect the battery flex cable first to ensure that the iPhone remains turned off.
Lift the ends of the display flex cable and ambient light sensor flex cable off the connectors.
Hold the display by the edges. Pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them. Then set the display facedown on a clean, flat surface.
Gently lift the bottom speaker out of the enclosure.
- Caution: Don’t damage the grounding springs on the bottom speaker.
Gently fold back the USB-C connector flex cable 90 degrees to access one super screw. Then complete the entire step.
Use a torque driver and the super screw bit to remove one super screw from the Taptic Engine.
Gently tilt up the Taptic Engine to access the flex cable underneath.
Lift the end of the Taptic Engine flex cable off the connector and remove the Taptic Engine from the enclosure.
Reassembly

Hold the Taptic Engine over the enclosure and press the end of the Taptic Engine flex cable to the connector. Then lower the Taptic Engine into the enclosure.
- Caution: While lowering the Taptic Engine into the enclosure, ensure that the Taptic Engine doesn’t get caught on the USB-C connector flex cable.
Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 14.5 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and the super screw bit to install one new super screw (923-15863) (F5) into the Taptic Engine.
Gently fold down the USB-C connector flex cable. Position the grounding spring over the bottom two screw holes.
Set the torque value on the adjustable torque driver to 13 Ncm. Use the adjustable torque driver and crosshead bit to install two new crosshead screws into the Taptic Engine.
Important: Ensure that the grounding spring is positioned in the original orientation.

Use the teal torque driver and crosshead bit to install three new crosshead screws (923-15865) (J4, J5, J6) into the Taptic Engine.
