Caution

• To avoid damaging the lenses, don’t touch the front camera assembly or nearby parts.

• Don’t touch the back of the display. Touching the back of the display may affect image quality.

Important

• Read Heated Display Removal Fixture if you’re setting up the fixture for the first time.

• If you replace this part, it’s recommended to run Repair Assistant in order to finish the repair. Repair Assistant will be available on the device after you’ve completed all reassembly steps.

Removal

Note: If you've already completed the removal steps, skip to reassembly.

1. Use a torque driver and the PL1.1 bit to remove two PL1.1 screws, one from each side of the USB-C connector.

   

2. Use the heated display removal fixture to heat the display adhesive. Refer to the Heated Display Removal Fixture Operating Manual for instructions.

   

3. Remove the iPhone from the heated display removal fixture and place it in the repair tray with the display faceup and the USB-C connector facing the cutout.

   • Caution: Fully open the display pocket to avoid scratching the iPhone enclosure.

     

4. Use the adhesive cutter to cut along the left and right sides of the display, stopping at the antenna bands.

   • Caution: You must use a new adhesive cutter.

     

   • Pull down on the display to disengage the internal display clips along the top edge. Then use the adhesive cutter to cut around the top and corners to release the display.

     • Caution: To avoid damaging the enclosure or display, ensure that the internal display clips are released before you tilt up the display.

       

5. Insert the repair tray suction cups into the slots in the repair tray. Grasp only the edges of the display and tilt it up toward the suction cups. Press the top and bottom edges of the display to secure it to the suction cups.

   • Caution

     • Don't damage the flex cables as you tilt up the display.

     • Avoid pressing on the back of the display when securing it to the suction cups.

       

   • Place the front camera cap on the front camera.

     

6. Use a torque driver and the crosshead bit to remove two crosshead screws, one from the battery connector cowling and one from the display connector cowling. Then complete the entire step before continuing to the next step.

   

   • Remove the two cowlings and save them for reassembly.

     

   • Lift the end of the battery flex cable off the connector.

     

   • Lift the ends of the display flex cable and ambient light sensor flex cable off the connectors.

     

   • Hold the display by the edges. Pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them from the display. Then set the display facedown on a clean, flat surface.

     

Reassembly

1. Remove the suction cups from the repair tray.

2. Use ESD-safe tweezers or the adhesive removal tool to pick up the display adhesive. Then pull the adhesive at a 45-degree angle to remove it. Repeat this process until all the adhesive is removed from the perimeter of the enclosure.

   • Caution

     • Don’t touch the front camera assembly, grounding springs, or nearby parts.

     • Don’t damage the black film or the two audio isolation foams around the top speaker grille.

       

3. Use ethanol wipes or IPA wipes to clean residual adhesive from the enclosure and only from the edges of the display.

   • Caution

     • Don't touch any other part of the display glass with the ethanol wipes or IPA wipes. Ethanol and isopropyl alcohol may damage the display and affect image quality.

     • Don't use the adhesive removal tool to clean the display.

     • Don't touch the front camera assembly, grounding springs, or nearby parts.

       

4. Inspect the top speaker grille and the two audio isolation foams. If either is damaged, replace the top speaker grille before continuing to reassembly step 5. If there's no visible damage, skip to reassembly step 5.

   

   • Use ESD-safe tweezers to peel the top speaker grille off the enclosure.

     

   • Use ESD-safe tweezers to position the new top speaker grille in the enclosure. Gently press along the length of the top speaker grille to adhere it to the enclosure.

     

5. Inspect the three grounding springs. If a grounding spring is bent or damaged, complete the entire step before continuing to reassembly step 6. If the grounding springs are in the correct orientation and have no visible damage, skip to reassembly step 6.

   • Identify the correct orientation of the grounding spring that needs to be replaced. Use ESD-safe tweezers or the black stick to hold the bent or damaged grounding spring. Then use a torque driver and the trilobe bit to remove the trilobe screw from the damaged grounding spring.

     

   • Identify the replacement grounding spring and screw according to the list below. Use ESD-safe tweezers to position the new grounding spring in the correct location. Then use the black torque driver and trilobe bit to install a new trilobe screw into the grounding spring.

     • Top left: grounding spring (923-15892), trilobe screw (923-15889)

     • Top right: grounding spring (923-15891), trilobe screw (923-15889)

     • Bottom left: grounding spring (923-15893), trilobe screw (923-15890)

       

6. Align the replacement display adhesive over the enclosure. Ensure that the top holes of the adhesive align over the front camera assembly.

   • Caution: Ensure that you've removed all residual adhesive from the display and the enclosure before applying the replacement adhesive.

     

7. The replacement display adhesive has a top release liner, middle release liner, and a bottom release liner. Grasp the tab on the bottom release liner. Then slowly pull the bottom release liner out from under the adhesive while pressing the adhesive onto the enclosure.

   • Important: Don't remove the top release liner yet.

     

8. Use the black stick to adhere the display adhesive to the enclosure. Move the black stick around the edge of the enclosure at least three times to ensure that the adhesive is adhered evenly.

   • Caution

     • Don't damage the bottom and top grounding springs. Run the black stick along the edges in the directions of the grounding springs.

     • Don't touch the front camera assembly.

     • Don't damage the top speaker grille or the two audio isolation foams. If either is damaged, replace the top speaker grille before continuing to step 9.

       

9. Inspect the display adhesive to ensure it's positioned on the shelf of the enclosure. If it isn't correctly positioned, repeat reassembly steps 2 and 3 to remove it. Then repeat reassembly steps 4 through 9 to install a new display adhesive.

   

10. Remove the top release liner as shown.

    • Important: Don't remove the middle release liner on the edge of the enclosure yet.

      

11. Insert the suction cups into the repair tray.

    

12. Align the left edge of the display with the left edge of the enclosure. Then gently press along the edges of the display to secure it to the suction cups.

    • Important: If you're installing a replacement display, peel the protective liner from the top and underside of it before continuing.

      

13. Press the ends of the display flex cable and ambient light sensor flex cable to the connectors.

    • Important: Press evenly along the length of each connector.

      

14. Position the display connector cowling over the ends of the display and ambient light sensor flex cables.

    • Important: Ensure that the display connector cowling tab is engaged before positioning the cowling over the flex cables.

      

15. Use the green torque driver and crosshead bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-15882) (A2) into the display connector cowling.

    

16. Press the end of the battery flex cable to the connector.

    • Important: Press evenly along the length of the connector.

      

17. Position the battery connector cowling over the end of the battery flex cable.

    • Important: Ensure that the battery connector cowling hook is engaged before positioning the cowling over the flex cable.

      

18. Use the green torque driver and crosshead bit to install one new crosshead screw (923-15881) (A1) into the battery connector cowling.

    

19. Peel the first strip of the middle release liner (1) counterclockwise, starting at the bottom of the enclosure. Peel the second strip (2) clockwise. Don’t peel the remaining strip yet.

    • Caution

      • Inspect the display adhesive to ensure that it’s in the correct position and isn’t damaged or wrinkled. If the adhesive is damaged, remove it and apply replacement adhesive.

      • Avoid touching the components of the front camera and nearby parts.

        

20. Hold the display by the edges as you pull the tabs on the suction cups to release them. Then remove the suction cups from the repair tray.

    

21. Hold the display by the edges over the enclosure. Use ESD-safe tweezers to peel the remaining release liner strip.

22. Remove the front camera cover just before aligning the top edge of the display with the top edge of the enclosure.

    

23. Ensure that the front camera assembly is in position. Then slowly tilt the display downward until you feel the display clips engage.

    

24. Press all four corners of the display simultaneously. Then press along the edges of the display until it clicks and the display is flush with the enclosure.

    • Caution: Ensure that the flex cables aren't trapped between the display and the enclosure. Feel the edges of the display for variations or gaps. If the display isn't flush, repeat all removal steps and check the flex cables for damage. Then repeat reassembly steps 1 through 24.

      

25. Position the repair tray with the iPhone in the display press with the display faceup. Pull down the lever until the display press locks.

26. Wait until the display press beeps and its timer shows 0. Pull down the lever (1) and pull out the release knob (2). Lift the lever (3). Then remove the repair tray from the display press.

    

27. Use the blue torque driver and PL1.1 bit to install two new PL1.1 screws, one on each side of the USB-C connector. As you install the screws, press lightly on the display near the USB-C connector. Count five clicks from the torque driver as you install each screw to ensure that the screw is fully installed.

    • Caution: If the screws aren't flush, remove the screws. Then repeat this step to install a new set of PL1.1 screws. If the new screws still aren't flush, repeat all removal and reassembly steps.

    • Note: Use the correct screw color for the model.
