Symptoms
Can't see your iPod in iTunes or the Finder? Remember these five basic suggestions when you run into a problem with your iPod. If one of the following doesn’t help, read on for solutions to specific problems.
Resolution
Note: This article is for Mac users. If you are using Windows, we have a separate article for you if your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod. If you have an iPod touch, check this document.
Try the iPod troubleshooting assistant
If you have not already done so, try the steps in the iPod Troubleshooting Assistant (choose your iPod model from the list).
If the issue remains after following the troubleshooting assistant, follow the steps below to continue troubleshooting your issue.

If your iPod displays an exclamation point folder or sad-iPod icon
Check your iPod cable
- Verify that you are using the cable that came with your iPod. Some third-party cables may not work properly with iPod.
- Verify that nothing is in or blocking your computer's FireWire or USB port.
- Check the connections to make sure that the cable is completely plugged in.
Note: If you're using an iPod shuffle (4th generation), verify that the small end of the USB cable is inserted securely in the iPod shuffle's headset jack. See this article for more information. - Try another known-good FireWire or USB to Dock Connector cable, if available.
If swapping out your old cable for another resolves the issue, then your original cable should be replaced. You can order an iPod cable replacement at the iPod Service website.
Disconnect all other USB and FireWire devices
Your Mac can provide power to USB and FireWire devices that don't have their own power sources, such as hard drives, cameras, and (of course) iPod. If you have too many of these types of devices connected to your computer, it can keep your Mac from recognizing your iPod. To see if this is the case:
- Disconnect all devices from your computer's USB and FireWire ports.
- Connect your iPod to your computer's USB or FireWire port using the cable that came with iPod.
If your Mac recognizes your iPod, you might consider purchasing a powered USB or FireWire hub to connect your nonpowered devices. These hubs are available from the Apple Store.
If you see a USB Low Power Notice
With any model of iPod (except for iPod shuffle), if you connect it to a low-powered USB port (such as one on your keyboard or bus-powered USB hub), the USB Lower Power Notice may appear:

If you click OK, your iPod won't appear. Make sure that you connect your iPod directly to one of the computer's USB ports or to a powered (as in connected to an electrical outlet) USB hub.
Connecting iPod (3rd generation), iPod (Click Wheel) and iPod photo through USB requires Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later. Use Software Update to obtain these updates. Apple recommends using the latest version of Mac OS X.
Check if your Mac is sleeping
Your Mac must be awake to recognize iPod. If the iPod is connected while the Mac is sleeping, and then you wake the Mac, your iPod may not appear. Wake the computer before connecting your iPod.
Try alternate ports
- Verify that your connections are secure.
- Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer or on a different computer, if available.
If this resolves the issue, consult your computer's service and support guide to find out how you can get the computer's port repaired. If your computer doesn't recognize any USB or FireWire devices through any port, see this article.
Your Mac may not meet the iPod system requirements
Verify that your Mac meets the iPod system requirements. Select your country from the list, and select your model of iPod to review the system requirements.
Third-party FireWire and USB cards and PC cards may not work and are not supported by Apple.
Check your iTunes and iPod Support installation
Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer. Verify that iTunes is installed on the startup disk and not on another volume.
Download iTunes and reinstall it.
Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 only: If the issue remains, insert your OS X installation disc. In the Finder, select your OS X installation disc and double-click Optional Installs. When you see a list of software to be installed, select iPod support and finish the installation. Restart your Mac and test.
Check your iPod's port
- Make sure that nothing is in or blocking the Dock Connector or FireWire port on your iPod.
- Check the connection to make sure the Dock Connector or FireWire cable is completely plugged in.
If the above steps don't resolve the issue, your iPod may need service. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service website.
