View an animated GIF’s frames in Preview on Mac

An animated GIF is a graphics file that shows a short animation. In Preview, you can look at each frame in the animation as an individual still image.

Open Preview for me

  1. In the Preview app on your Mac, open the animated GIF.

  2. Choose View > Thumbnails (if thumbnails aren’t already showing).

To show or hide the frames in the animation, click the disclosure triangle next to the file’s name in the sidebar.

You can use Quick Look to view an animated GIF file by selecting it in Finder, then pressing the Space bar.
