Set up a shared internet connection for iPhone and iPad
Overview
Tethered caching lets a Mac share its internet connection with iPhone and iPad connected to it using USB or Thunderbolt, and serve them cached content at the same time. Devices get their updates and apps over the cable instead of over Wi-Fi as tethered content caching automatically directs connected clients to use the content cache on the host Mac.
This is most useful when you're preparing many devices at once such as at the start of a school year. The content is downloaded from Apple when the first device requests it, and served from the Mac for subsequent requests.
Requirements
The following is required to use tethered content caching:
A Mac with macOS 10.13 or later.
Connect the Mac to the internet using Ethernet.
Connect a Mac laptop to power. Tethered content caching prevents the Mac from going to sleep
Important: Tethered caching and Internet Sharing can’t both be turned on at the same time. Turning on Tethered caching turns Internet Sharing off.
Turn on tethered caching
You can automatically turn on tethered caching and prevent the user from turning it off or restrict it. Alternatively, go to System Settings > General > Sharing > Content Caching and do the following:
Turn on Content Caching.
Select Share Internet connection.
Optionally, choose which types of content to cache.
Connect your devices to the Mac, directly or through a hub or cart.
