App and book deployment in macOS Server
Use Profile Manager to make apps and books available to managed devices and your users. You retain ownership of the apps, allowing you to revoke and reassign them as needed.
You can use Profile Manager to distribute two types of apps to devices: in-house enterprise apps that are developed using the Apple Developer Enterprise Program, and custom apps and App Store apps purchased through Apple School Manager, Apple Business Manager, or volume purchasing.
In-house enterprise apps and books
You can distribute apps developed under the Apple Developer Enterprise Program and EPUBS and PDFs you create to devices, device groups, users, and user groups. The licensing restrictions from Apple for in-house enterprise apps are contained in the Apple Developer Enterprise Program License Agreement.
Apps purchased through Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager
Apple School Manager and Apple Business Manager permit an authorized administrator to purchase custom apps and App Store apps and assign them to devices. After you assign apps to a device or device group, users can download apps and books to their devices using App Store, or apps can be pushed directly to the device using Profile Manager.
App distribution
You retain ownership of apps by assigning, revoking, and redistributing them to your devices and users on iOS 7 or later, iPadOS, or on OS X 10.9 or later via Profile Manager. If a device or user no longer needs an app purchased using volume purchasing, that app can be revoked and reassigned to another device or user. The total number of apps purchased and available for assignment is shown under Apps in the Profile Manager sidebar.
Books purchased through volume purchasing
Volume purchasing for books works like volume purchasing for apps, except books can’t be revoked or reassigned. Otherwise, managing volume purchased books is just like managing volume purchased apps.
