Set up a scanner or fax on Mac
You can add a scanner to the list of devices in Printers & Scanners settings.
If you’ve already set up a printer that includes a scanner, you may be able to use its scanner features without additional setup. Select the printer in the list, then click Scan.
Set up a scanner
Before setting up your scanner, make sure macOS has the latest scanner software available. Check with your scanner’s manufacturer whether any updates are available for your scanner model.
Follow the instructions that came with the scanner to connect it to your Mac.
If your Mac has a single USB-C port and you want to connect a USB scanner, use a multiport adapter. Connect the scanner, then connect a USB-C cable to a power supply to prolong the battery life of your Mac. See Use USB-C cables with Mac.
Choose Apple menu
in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
If you don’t see your scanner in the Printers list, click the Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax button on the right.
Select your scanner, then click Add.
If your scanner isn’t in the list, see the documentation that came with the scanner to find out how to scan with it.
Set up a printer to send faxes
If you have a multifunction printer connected to your Mac, you can set it up to send faxes. (As an alternative to faxing, consider scanning a document and saving it as a PDF.)
Follow the instructions that came with the printer to set it up and connect it to your Mac.
On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Printers & Scanners in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
If you don’t see your multifunction printer in the list, click the Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax button on the right.
Select your printer, click the Use pop-up menu, choose the version of printer software that supports faxing, then click Add Fax Printer.
To set up a fax queue, click the printer in the Printers list, type a name for the fax queue, then click Done.
